Looking to buy one,but not too familiar with these. I've seen, like and shot the Savage, and it's at a good price. Now, looking at Rugers, the ones I've seen look great and are a lot more money than the other makers.

Is this a "you get what you pay for" situation, or I can't go wrong with a Savage or Marlin.

Thanks for any info!

I have a Ruger bolt action in .17 hmr, and a relative has a Savage. They both put those little .17 hmr rounds in tiny little groups. I think the Savage with the accutrigger is a great gun for the money and I can't say the Ruger is all that much better.

IIRC most people on the rimfirecentral boards picked the Marlin for better accuracy.

These guns are a lot like .22 rifles in that you can spend top dollar and get one that will do a better job right out of the box than the others or you can buy a standard model and sink some cash into it and depending on your tinkering skills wind up with a very accurate rifle.

I have the savage bull barreled version with an avenger? Stock. It does shoot really well. The problem is the price of ammo. I can load 100 rounds in 223 or 22-250 for the price of a box of 50 .17hmr

The .17 HMR is NOT a coyote caliber.

Agreed. The .17hmr might work on coyote, but so might a .22 short. For a reliable and humane coyote round, the .204 Ruger is great flat-shooting cartridge, as are the 22-250 and .220 Swift. Of course, one could go with .223 as well. If you just want them dead, anything on up, naturally, would do the job.

Edit to add: If you want to really reach out on coyote, .204 is a little light. For longer distance coyote I would go with a .22-250 and might even consider the .25-06 (which is also a nice white-tail cartridge with the right load).

i have had a marlin bull barrel bolt action .17 for years and got it for cheap money. it's a tack driver and with proper rounds its a great varmint gun. i have been considering putting a bigger scope on mine because mine is only good to about 150yds and i can keep 3" groups with it at that range. i figure i could be ok up to 200yds with the right optic. its got a $19.97 walmart scope right now.
