So I took out my AR the other day to put a bit of oil on it, etc. I happen to look down the barrel from the receiver end and there is a small chip (best way I can explain it) It's very hard to see and taking a picture of it didn't work too well [rolleyes]

In the end, I will probably be taking it to a gun smith before I take it to the range, but does anyone know if this is a critical fault as in, time to buy a new barrel?

Do you mean that there is a piece missing from one of the lands or there is a chunk sticking up?

I wish I could attach a picture of it. If you look down the barrel, there looks like there is a small square piece missing (it's very small actually), almost as if someone took a tiny chisel and pried a piece of the barrel by putting the chisel in the rifling groove and chipping a piece out.

I just tried to use MS paint to explain better, but I am afraid if I post it here, it will turn into an epic thread at my expense lol.

That explains the problem a lot better. I have never heard of such a thing happening but then my experience in that area is very low. Is this a new or old rifle? It sounds like you probably need a good gunsmith or someone with a lot of experience and knowledge of barrels to advise you.

That could be the gas port. Is this missing piece in the same area as the gas block?

It's approximately 1/3 of the way down the barrel when looking at it from the upper with the lower pin removed.

Edit: it's located on the bottom of the barrel. The gas port is on the top isn't it?

It's a Colt match target. As far as I can tell, it hasn't ever been modified. As far as the lining, I honestly can't say. I would assume it would be whatever was stock for this rifle. It was made in 1997 confirmed by Colt.
