Not that I'm going to purchase an AR10 anytime soon, it crosses my mind occasionally. I wanted to do a build but now wondering who makes a nice one. The LMT looks interesting and saw a prototype of a squad mid range rifle they were going to make for the military in 308. I don't know if they had plans to manufacture it to release to the public. Had 18 or 20" bbl, don't remember which. But how do those LMTs stack up in the greater scheme of things, anyone own one. I've seen reviews of course in the usual publications but they never shit on the reviewed products. Would like to keep price under 3 grand.

LMT is good stuff. I'd buy another LMT rifle without hesitation.

That said, if I were in the market for another AR-10 style rifle I'd probably get one of the new DPMS Gen II rifles. They were able to remove some wasted space from the receiver to get them a little bit smaller and more manageable for guys like me who have human sized arms. Early reviews are pretty good.

Look at Rock River's LAR-8 as well. It's a quality 308 AR. Then again, going by my screen name I am a little biased.

Here's my LAR-8 I put together a few years ago.

I agree (I own examples of both.) All I'm saying is that the new DPMS G2 is worth taking a look at. The shorter receiver makes a big difference if you don't happen to have gorilla arms.

I've got an Armalite AR10. Nice gun, but for me it is a bench gun. The thing handles like a boat oar.

If your budget is $3k, without question go SCAR heavy. If your heart is set on an AR platform, then look at all options, LWRC, LMT, POF, SIG, there's lots of them.

I have both a DPMS MK-12 .308 and an LMT .308. they are very different rifles. The DPMS was unreliable at best out of the box and needed a return trip to the factory. It is a 1.5-2 in grp rifle with match ammo. That being said it gets the job done and if fun and worth the 1500.00 price tag. The LMT is the Cadillac of AR-10's. It works flawlessly out of the box with any ammo. It shoots 0.5 in grps with match ammo. and is better in every way. but you pay for that with the 3k pricetag.

LMT - Military style, proven, tested, as reliable as it gets, generally less accurate than bull barrel RRA and DPMS guns.

DPMS - Less money, bull barrel guns are very accurate, G2 guns are very svelte for a .308

RRA - Very accurate for the money. Lots of non-standard parts, including magazines. Ability to custom build a gun with exactly what you want on RRA web site.

If you want to build a gun and like the LMT monolithic rail platform (MRP), but want to build your own, check out the Mega Arms and Aeroprecision COPS uppers.

The SCAR 17 is a great gun. Its very light, and with a Geissele (I much prefer it over the Timney SCAR trigger) trigger it is a sub MOA gun. At least mine is with only a 1-4 scope and my handloads. One thing I like about it is that if you know how to run an AR, then you know how to run a SCAR.
