I know very little about archery - I've been to the archery courses, fired a few arrows etc, just not my thing. My wife on the other hand has taken an interest in it. So where do I start - compound bow or old school long bow?

Hunting or target? And either go big (Matthews or hoyt) or get a cheap pse ( you get what you pay for) from basspro.... but if you live in southeastern mass check out reedys in middelboro they set me up good. And usually they let you shoot a few different types...

Jerry's Bait & Tackle seems like a nice place. I don't shoot much now a days, but the past couple of times I went in to talk to him about the newer gear, he has always been helpful. He is an avid shooter and hunter so he knows both sides. He has 6 - 20 yd lanes upstairs (you can join and pay a flat fee and shoot all year!)

Starters - I suggest a recurve in low poundage and see if you like it before you drop big $$ on a nice outfit. Some shops have demos for you to test out. Good family sport IMHO.

A compound bow will usually be easier for most people as holding the bow at full draw is 70% plus easier than a traditional bow. Try and find a local archery store / range near you where they may have rental bows or even demo bows to give you an idea of what she may like. A compound has to be sized to the person including draw weight, pull length and letoff. Compounds get expensive very quickly, while an olympic style recurve is usually cheaper and if a light pull can be enjoyable although much harder to shoot well IMO.

FYI a longbow tends to be a specialist bow and can be difficult to shoot well, let alone be comfortable with quickly.

If shes starting to take a interest dont go out and buy a high quality bow, some brands like bowtech/diamond, Martin, Bear and a few others make womens and youth bows and they're affordable. The limbs can be switched to allow for light draw weights, most commercial bows are setup for an average male. its somewhere around 29in draw length and 60lb draw weight.

Find a bow with the highest let off that can be had around 80%, so shes not holding alot of weight at fulldraw. Also find a high brace height 7in and above it will be quite forgiving. Also stay away from dual cam, single cam is the way to go. You can find decent entry level bows at bass pro, cabelas, gander mountain etc. just dont expect any real service at those places, you're gonna pay a little more going to a shop but if they are a decent shop then your pretty much set.

What else? oh yea arrows. I like carbon arrows they are strong, light, and dont warp. They can take a beating too unlike alum. arrows. decent arrows can be had for a little bit of money.

But its all for nothing if her technique is bad and her posture is lacking. Having some lessons is key, same as guns the fundamentals will kill you.

Check out Ed in Westhapton, he can set you and your wife up with "just" what you need.

I would say take a ride out here to see Ed Fisher. Ed is great, real nice guy and fair pricing. I've shoot with him for years.

Here's Ed's info:

E and J Archery

Takedown recurve with basic sight etc.

If she is really, really into it then hide your wallet.

Reedy's for sure. For target gear try Archery USA in Dedham.
