I may have a line on a new, unfired Steyr Aug. I know it will have to have the flash hider removed and a comp pinned in its' place. I know I will need preban mags also.

Anyone know a good price for these rifles? Any ipinions on those that have owned / shot these rifles?

My fear is that I will end up buying it and eigther not liking it or end up needing the money I have tied up in the rifle and will have to sell it. Anyone know how the resale market is for these?

I typically dont buy a rifle unless I intend on passing it on to my kids, but this deal came up and now I am conflicted on buying this.

The Aug is a great Bull Pup in my opinion, I have had one for years, it is an older, preban gun. Only downside, preban mags are expensive. I dont know what the "new" Augs bring, but the prebans have kept pace with other preban stuff...... For me, they have a nice balance and shoot well...

If it is preban AUG then you will not need to remove the flashhider. If it is one of the newly made AUGs or the MSAR clones you will need to replace the flash suppressor with a muzzle brake. The price of preban AUGs is tough to justify with MSARs going for 1300-1400. Perform a search on gunbroker to get current market value of a real Steyr preban. If you are buying for "collectability" go with the preban.

I own an MSAR and I think the handling characteristics (aside from mag changes) are excellent. OAL makes the gun very handy.

A while back CDNN had a conversion "kit" that would allow the AUG to accept AR mags. It was pricey but AR 30 rd mags are easier to find and a damn cheaper than Steyr mags. MSAR may be able to do the same I think the price was in the $500 range but I'm not sure on that point.

The MSAR E4 accepts AR mags, and even if you get the STG556 that takes AUG mags, I think you can replace the stock with the E4 version to convert it. But I would check with Microtech to be sure.

The AUG is a great gun, but there is the issue of maintenance and parts. If you get an AR, you will have a choice of a multitude of just about any part. With an AUG, Sig 556, etc. you're constrained to the manufacturer's parts and few, if any, aftermarket parts. If you want a gun for shooting, get an AR. If you want it for collectibility or the cool factor, an AUG or similar semi-exotic may fit your needs nicely.

Just ask - if one of the internal plastic parts breaks on an AUG or MASR, are you sure you will be able to get a replacement part in 10 years? Ask the same question about any AR part and compare answers.
