Barrel Brake In

What is a proper procedure for braking in a barrel of a .17 HMR? Is it necessary? I figure since I had to brake in the barrel of my AR which shoots jacketed bullets, the .17 HMR which also shoots jacked bullets the barrel must also be broken in. There Is nothing in the manual, about barrel brake in.

All my barrels get the same procedure. Run a patch with oil down the tube, fire one shot. Run a patch with oil down the tube, fire three shots. Run a patch with oil down the tube, fire five. Then I run an oily patch down, usually fire a box, clean and lubricate the gun, take it home, and that's it.

I don't know if this helps or wether it is or isn't the proper procedure. It could be overkill for all I know. But it has worked, hasn't hurt anything, and gives me peace of mind. Let me know how you make out with the HMR, I'm dying to try that caliber out.

2) clean rifle
3) shoot the sumbitch until you're out of ammo
4) clean rifle
5) store properly and repeat

I have no empirical evidence that breaking in a barrel improves accuracy, but the routine I used did make a difference in how fast the barrel cleans up after shooting.

The routine I used is:
Shoot one – clean (for ten shots)
Shoot three – clean (for thirty shots)
Shoot five – clean (for fifty shots)

Now that the barrel is broken in, just a few passes of alternating wet (with Hoppes) and dry patches cleans out the powder and copper fouling. Sometimes cleaning takes longer than other times, depending how much shooting I have done, but it is certainly much less than when I first started.

I have done this with one of my .308s and I am in the middle of the process with one of my .30-06s. If you choose to conduct an elaborate barrel break in, I am not sure what difference caliber would make in the procedure.

There are many opinions on this. Find something that makes sense to you and go with it!

I like to run a few patches with JB bore paste down the barrels when i first get them , then just clean regularly.

If you have never used JB bore paste . try it you will like it .
