Just got my first gun, a Remington 870. I have a field barrel on it. I took it off to transport the gun and just put it back on, and went out shooting. While bringing it into my house I noticed theres about a 1/16 of an inch gap between the barrel and frame of the chamber. The barrel freely goes back and forth in that small space, until it hits the chamber or magazine cap. Is that normal, or should I have it checked?

Yes sir, it does go all the way down. However, when I put the magazine cap on, then the pump foreward, there is space between the mag cap and the barrel guide ring( Dont know correct term). It jiggles back and forth in this space. It is as far back as possible, and the cap is screwed all the way in. Might not be a big deal, but if it is I do not want to end up in the hospital.

This is not a dumb Question congratulations on your first gun. No it absolutely should not be rattling. I have the same gun and its tight as a drum. you should not fire it until this is worked out. Did you buy it from a big box store or a gun shop.
I fixed the problem. Magazine cap was not going on all the way. Wasn't pushing it down while it made the clicking sound, where the rough ridges are in the end of the cap. Figured that meant it was time to stop twisted it. Sorry.

Rem 870 is a good multipurpose shotgun, all you need to get is a shortened barrel and theres your home defense gun. never be afraid to ask questions on this forum.
K. Here is a question. I was looking at barrels online and at gunshops. All of them were about 120 or more. Can you get used smooth bore barrels anywhere? I want to shorten a barrel, or buy an 18inch barrel for HD. But can't find any I can afford. I might just wait

870 rules was also my first gun some 10 years ago.
Do you have an express? Keep an eye out for the barrel you get, you might want to make sure it's an express barrel so the finish matches. parkerized versus blued.
