So today I finally swapped out the furniture that I've been meaning to change on a couple of my rifles.

I changed the thumbhole stock on my FAL

to the pistol grip and standard buttstock, now I just need to get the receiver drilled and tapped for the scope mount.

Then I changed the wood stock, forend, and muzzle brake on my AK

for a polymer folding stock, new pistol grip, quad rail forend, foreward vertical grip, an M-16 style flash hider, side scope mount, and a Tru Glo red dot sight.

any thoughts or opinions? AK blasphemy? Thumbhole stock looked cooler?

I was going to buy a new rifle, but I thought making the ones I had closer to the way I actually wanted them was a better move. for now....

Where are you planning to drill and tap your receiver on the FAL?

In my neighbor's basement

ETA I have a replacement cover that has a built in rail, the upper receiver just needs six holes put in it for the screws.

Sorry I meant where on the receiver :) So as I understand it you are drilling the sides for the railed receiver cover?

Yeah the railed cover I have came with six small screws and requires three holes drilled on each side of the upper to mount it. Then I should be able to mount pretty much any optic on there. Any suggestions for sights?

Eta the railed cover is in the first pic above the rifle.

Now you're talkin'. What fun is it just unwrapping a new gun and sticking it in the safe?

Don't get me wrong, I love getting a new gun, but at this point with the amount of cash I had available making these more fun and comfortable to use was a better choice than getting another piece in the safe that I might seldom use.

Turns out no drilling was required, the thing just screws tight in place of the old reciever cover. Now I need to find a scope to put on it, I have a Bushnell Banner 4-7x scope that might take up residence on top of this rifle for the time being, but eventually i'd like something nicer.
