Big upsurge in Mormons stockpiling food

My Mormon friends laugh at the Church's all of the sudden, "Let's get prepared!"
It's mainly in relation to the large increase in prices... which strange coincidence also tends to lead to higher prices because people start to stock pile.
The big question is how much of this food they buy is going to go to waste rather than the table and into animals/people's mouths?
