Okay guys and gals...

As some of you may know, April 15th has been designated Buy A Gun Day, the theory being that, since it's also tax day, we should exercise our Second Amendment rights as our money is being stolen from us...

So, without further comment, I present my Buy A Gun Day purchase 2 days early:

Thanks go to The Goose for this fine acquisition. Now if I could only find some @#%$ing magazines for it... [wink]

Tomorrow, if all goes well. Hoping to meet up with Bruce at his new home on the range in NH...

If she shoots half as good as she looks I'll be a happy man...

It looks nice but I'd already be scouring the net for military style features for it.[smile] If I come across any links for Dragunov style stocks or extra mags I'll send you a PM.

VEPR receivers are cut at an angle where the stock is joined. A standard issue Dragunov (or any stamped/milled AK-47 stock), stock won't fit.

Choate makes a synthetic one, but it would be a shame to replace wood with plastic. [sad2]

I don't know if it can be modified to fit or not but http://www.akparts.com sells a dragunov style stock for 10 bucks. If thats the look you want it may be worth dropping short money and seeing if you can make it work. No mater what you do that is a sweet piece of hardware, any vis-mods are just gravy.

I've seen some done with wood Dragunov style stocks. Not the standard AK style ones but nice looking wooden military style ones. Can't remember where, maybe the Saiga forums.
There's so many people making accessories and goodies for these that before you know it they'll be more customizable than a Ruger 10/22.
I should start thinking of getting one.[hmmm]

I guess I started thinking about getting one a little too hard cause here it is:

I was at M&M's in Plymouth today and saw it on the rack. I wound up buying a Yugo M59 SKS and about 10 miles into the ride home talked my wife into turning around so I could give it back and get the Saiga instead.
She would have rather I stayed with the cheaper SKS but knew I really wanted the Saiga. [smile] Man I sure love my wife! She understood the whole Buy a Gun day thing and all.
Now I'll be shopping for a Dragunov style stock and scope. [grin]

Nice stuff guys.
Ray, I had that SKS in my hands when it came in. I was tempted but I just haven't haven't had it in me to get an SKS. Yet...

There's a story with that SKS. Sure its in VG condition, the bore is mint, the muzzle crown is excelent, but I think I've seen it before.
A few months ago I was at Sippican and there was a new member there that I had met before. He was shooting an M59 SKS that he said he got from M&M's. It had matching numbers according to him, and it may have had the sling, I can't remember. What I do remember is that after a few shots the firing pin would get stuck. I asked him if he took the bolt apart, cleaned out the channels, etc. and he said yes.
After he went to his car and tapped the firing pin retainer out, he came back and showed us a beveled area on the firing pin that looked like it was slamming past the retainer and was causing it to get stuck not allowing it to go forward. I told him he could easily get parts like a new bolt assembly but he mentioned something about bringing it back.
Today as I was buying the SKS, I asked the seller if it was a return and mentioned the problem I saw someone having with one they bought from there. He said that rifle had been taken care of and it was a 59/66, but I remember it being an M59 w/out the grenade launcher.
Thats one of the things I kept thinking about as my wife was driving back home. When I leaned in the back seat and pulled the rifle out of the box, I noticed the chip in the wood by the crossbolt and remembered it was the same rifle I saw the kid having trouble with. [shocked]
Now I could have easily gotten a different bolt and fixed it if it hadn't been fixed upon return, but something made me decide to trade it for the Saiga. Even though as the seller put it back up on the rack I stared at it as if it should be mine and belonged in the safe with the other SKS'. The price was definitely right, and it is a Samco rifle, one of the last M59s out there. But something guided me to the Saiga instead.
Who knows, maybe I'll go back in a month and if its still there I'll get it.

As for not having it in you to get an SKS yet, I can relate because I don't have a 1911 yet even though many here think they're essential. One thing is for sure when it comes to SKS rifles, at $150... how can you not have one. Or two, or three, or four, etc. etc. [smile]

Just remember, they're on the new ban list and endangered should it pass.
