First post here guys. Have a Sig P226 but have always wanted a Springfield XD and more recently the Mod.2. I am able to purchase in Maine but wondering if it's illegal to then bring to MA which is my primary residence. I've spoken to a few shops and read a bunch online but everything seems to be more opinions than fact. Does anyone know if this is doable?

Thanks in advance!!

No, its not, if you have an LTC-A, although the magazines themselves may be illegal if they hold more than 10 rounds.

If you're a resident of Maine as well, and they'll sell you the handgun t there's no issue with bringing it to MA.

But as Dr. Grant said, the mags if capable of accepting more than 10 rounds, should be left in ME if you intend on complying with the law. (and you aren't exempt)

Just curious how this works? Do you have a Maine or MA drivers license/ID? I assume that's what gun owners in free states need to show when purchasing?? Forgive my ignorance, I'm a mass hole...[laugh]

People with brains can swing dual residency pretty easy if you own property in another state, I'll just leave it at that. Some (but not all, some will only take state issued DLs as ID) FFL's will accept things like leases and so on as proof of residency. You can also get State IDs in some states and still legally maintain a drivers license in another.

Your so compassionate..lol

Most states have non drivers ID's that are acceptable for firearm purchases in said free states.

You can also use some other document that has your name and the address of your residence in the "secondary" state (like a tax bill) in combination with your driver's license from MA.

"Licensees may accept a combination of valid, government-issued documents to satisfy the identification document requirements of the Brady Act. A government-issued photo identification document bearing the name, photograph, and date of birth of the transferee may be supplemented by another valid, government-issued document showing the transferee's current residence address."

My father has a property in Florida and tried to get just a Florida ID while keeping his Mass DL. In the process of getting a State ID the state said they no longer issue state ID'S with out giving up ur driver license for ur other state of residence. Apparently 9/11 is was what changed that policy.

dual residency in Virginia's working out pretty well for me, they are semi weird though, if a handgun has a threaded barrel its considered an assault weapon.

Florida has a Concealed Weapons License that allows CCW & skips the waiting period. A resident does not give up their drivers license to obtain this.

The local shop in Maine (Howells in Gray) said that all I need to do is show my Maine real estate tax bill. Easy enough. Thinking the Springfield XDS in 9mm would make for a nice ccw. Mags are under 10 rounds.

Thanks for all the replies!!

How about if you previously lived in Mass (Still possess LTC A in Mass, but now live in Florida). If you bought say a Glock Gen 4 in Florida, would you be able to bring it up here and register it in Mass?

Are you no longer a MA resident at all? Did you notify the FRB and the chief who issued your LTC via certified mail when you moved? Do you have a MA non-resident LTC?

Without the answers to these questions you won't get a useful answer.

Technically, according to the FLRB, your resident license should have been expired when you moved out of state. Your expired license would permit you transportation and possession, but not carry, protection under MGL (I can find the exact cite if someone wants to nitpick, but LenS has stated this repeatedly).

If you are moving back into Masschusetts, you can bring any firearms that are not prohibited by the AWB laws provided you submit your application for LTC (and receive it?) within the time specified in the MGL. However, just like the OP, any non-low capacity magazines will be need to either left behind or permanently modified to 10 rounds or less.

One item to note, "registering" a firearm is not required when you move into Massachusetts as there is no transfer of ownership.

The best thing to do is to leave Massachusetts, and never come back. That is my plan as soon as my kid is out of school. Once in a free state, I will possess all the guns I want, in compliance with the law (of course). I hate Massachusetts.

I'm going to ask because I don't think i saw the answer to his exact question:

Since he owns property in Maine and can legally buy up there..
And since he has his Mass LTC-A, Can't he buy the gun in Maine with 10 round mags.. Can he legally bring it home Mass?

That Carry in 30 States license that you see offered.. Does that allow you to purchase firearms in those states or just "carry"?

You can purchase long guns and rifles in all 50 states. To purchase a pistol you have to have a residency claim. The carry license like Utah and Florida are for carry only.

So a Maine resident goes to a gun store to buy their first gun, they just have to prove residency? Same in New Hampshire?

Damn, gonna have to get my wife to buy a second home up there!

So the OP can buy whatever he wants in Maine, and just needs to register it online in Mass once he brings it here, right?

I own property in SC and have my "Non-Resident" LTC...however I can't buy a handgun there without a SC drivers license. [frown]
