cartridge identification

the numbers run (27) then (44), then looks like a lower case (hrn), then a lower case (s) with what appears to be a + sign after it. That's the best I can read.

This link may help: http://cartridgecollectors.org/headstampcodes.htm

Based on it being a .30-'06 , it's likely imported -"hrn" is a german factory.

If you have a freind with a .30-'06, give them to him, and let him put it to good use.

ETA: Possibly 8 x 57 Mauser? Then, a German maker would make sense....

Best measure carefully, or compare in the flesh to a known cartridge - pix make it hard....

32Hockey,

It sounds like there's a general concensus that it's likely a stripper clip of 5 8mm x 57mm mauser cartriages, but you can verify this by measuring the bullet diameter at the case mouth.

If it's .30-06 the bullet diameter would measure 0.308
If it's a 8mm x 57mm mauser, it would measure 0.323 - I know that's only 15 thousandths of an inch difference, but with a set of calipers you should be able to make that measurement.

I believe the 5-round stripper clip was the standard issue ammunition for military units using mausers during the World Wars. I also believe the head marking "44" indicates that it's a 1944 production year.

Who put .30-06 rounds on a 5-round stripper clip in 1944?

My guess (just a guess) is that they are more likely 8mm Mauser (8x57 rimmless) http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/7.92x57mm_Mauser on a 5-round stripper clip. Bullet diameter is .323"

It looks like a slightly fattened .30-06 round. (comparison in the upper left of the link)

Hell, I have .30-'06 in stripper clips NOW! [rofl] Not everyone shoots a garand, ya know! [smile]
