CHICOPEE, MA (WSHM) - Acting Chicopee Police Chief Thomas Charette confirmed to CBS 3 Springfield that he will no longer head up the city's police department.
Mayor David Kos is expected to announce the new chief of police during a press conference at 2:30 p.m. on Thursday.
Charette said he was notified by the mayor of the decision and immediately told Kos that he would be turning in his retirement papers after 27 years of service with the department.
Charette said that his retirement is what is best for the city and the department.
Former Mayor Michael Bissonette named Charette chief in 2012 and he was sworn in last year, but the state Civil Service Commission ruled that the choice was made on a political and personal basis and not based on qualifications.
The commission vacated Charette's permanent appointment in March.
