In doing a little research I noticed a couple people saying that the S&W factory barrel doesn't work, and you need the "conversion" barrel which is only sold by Storm Lake. I think those people might be off their rockers but wanted to check in here first. The storm lake one is more than twice as expensive so I'd love to save a couple bucks if possible!

Also, do I need to have a barrel like this shipped to an FFL since it's a "firearm component" or something like that? Or can they just ship it right to my house?

A factory 9mm barrel will not work. You will need a 40-9 conversion barrel.
As for shipping, straight to your door. No FFL needed.
You may also want to replace the ejector, so the brass deflects properly.
You will also need 9mm mags for reliable function.
If you are doing this for the range only, try just the barrel. If you are going to carry this way, I would suggest swapping out the recoil spring, extractor, ejector, barrel, and mags.
But if your going that far, trade it in for a M&P9 and be done.

Lone wolf might also make a barrel.
Good luck.

Thanks for the clarification on the barrel. Bummer :(

The 9mm is really just for the range so I'm not too worried, but from all the reports I've heard it works flawlessly without replacing all those parts (though I understand why it might be a good idea to do so when trusting your life to it).

I have a full size M&P purchased as a 40. I have a 9mm, 40sw and 357sig barrel and a stack of 9mm and 40/357 mags. As long as the barrel, ammo and mags match totally reliable. No conversion barrel. No recoil spring change. It all works
