I have been gathering material for some time with the plan to put together a small rifle rack to handle a couple black powder rifles that I have no room for as well as a spot to place rifles while digging through the safe. As usual I could not just pick up a generic store bought rack. I found a nice aged set of 1920’s Willy’s Wippet wheels of the marketplace and disassembled them. The face of the brake drums were cut off and reused and the ends of the spokes were removed for the upper rack. The the lower rim was flipped to provide a place for the butts to rest. In order to keep the patina I cleaned the wheels up and applied several coats of linseed oil. The rims were then reassembled and prepped to take the center support shaft. This was a piece of iron I have been holding onto for a project for quite some time. It was picked up along the northeast corridor in canton. I believe it had to do with blasting the right of way for the railroad. It was steamed to convert the rust and then sealed with linseed oil. I’m happy with how it came out but wish I had a larger rim for the lower rack.

reminds me of working on a Willys Whippet back when I turned a wrench for a living, replaced the brake bands. Must have been around 1986 or 87.

Very cool gun rack.

That’s pretty sweet looking. Nice job. Maybe glue some thin rubber strips on the bottom so you can seat each butt on it for some grip. And some felt strips up top so the rifles don’t get marred up by the steel.

I might put some felt on the top. It’s just wood on wood but could still cause some damage. I ran some rubber edging on the edge of the rim were the buts sit.

Ah! I see it now. Just zoomed in on the pictures closer, I thought those top spindles were rusty steel.
