Do you really want a Kel-Tec?

Has anyone done a comparison between the KelTec, Kahr and Ruger pocket pistols? Any opinions?

Thanks,

Rich

I have had a Kel Tec, Kahr, a Glock (even a Grendal)....the Kel Tec is my favorite for CC, because of it's weight mostly.

The Khar (a MK9) has a much nicer 'factory' trigger and is better made, but the Kel Tec can be 'doctored' to have a fine smooth trigger like a real good S&W revolver. But the Kahr weighs 22oz. compaired to 14oz. for the Kel Tec (P-11)....a HUGE difference! And the P-11 takes a 10 round 9mm mag!

I am going to sell my (in MA) Kahr and keep my Kel Tec. Although I am looking for a PF-9 and may sell the P-11 also.

A lot of people have never even seen a Kahr or Kel Tec in MA, after the AG outlawed them....but it seems many around here talk them down. A lot of people could not handle the P-40 (.40 cal) and would limp wrist them and say it was the gun.
There was usually a LONG waiting list to get Kel Tec's because they filled LEO orders first.

love my p3at. Perfect gun to throw in your pocket and go on your way

I'll say this about Kel Tec P-3AT models... if I were to ever buy one, it'd have to be brand new. These are not range fun guns, they are back up guns at best and with a reputation for sometimes fail after so many rounds, I sure as hell wouldn't want my life depending on one with X number of round count through it and have that one time I need it to be the time something breaks.

The same goes for any of the plastic pocket guns out there today.

Well, I got mine brand new. put about 30 rounds through it without a problem. I dont intent to shoot it much at all

Didn't the PF-9 take the place of the P-11? Basically, they took the 9mm from the P11 and the small size of the P3AT and made a small 9mm. No?

Same. Looks like a nice paperweight maybe.

Kel Tec relies on CCM, and just tumbles there parts and assembles them....so there are more likely to have some problems. THAT is how they offer them for for so little. But like I have said, they will make any of there weapons 100% if need be....for free. Even give you a completely new gun!

Then again, many first time pistol (automatic) buyers get them because they sell for so much less than say a Sig or HK....and 'limp wrist' them. A good pistol shot usually has no problem with them....

so Bill, do you work for kel tec or just obssessed?

I wouldn't say "obsessed"....I have owned them from the beginning. In fact if I could have designed a pistol, it would be the P-11. Remember the AMT 'Backup' DAO, or Colt 'Pocket 9"....terrible guns.
Then again, look at the new Sig 250....basically a Kel Tec (Grendal) design!

For some reason few Kel Tec's were sold in New England....many say the people here are too traditional....the rest of the country gobble them up.
In fact, I think every (legal) citizen should be issued one....LOL.

haha that would be awesome. on your 21st birthday you get wished happy bday and a gun put in your hand [/dream]

I had an SU16, really liked it but decided I don't shoot 223 as much as I'd like or could afford to do at the time, so sold it...made all my money back on it. I miss it BIG TIME!!

Then recently I picked up a Sub2000 on a whim from a NES member. My 22 year old son made fun of me..."what a POS", "waste of money" is all I heard from him. Then he came to the range with me...he had a blast and insists that we bring it on every range trip. A few ejection issues but I chaulk it up to the need for a cleaning and some very cheap 9mm ammo! I love it! I've had 1 experience with Kel Tec customer service with my SU 16 and they were great. Sent me a free firing pin as mine suddenly broke.

I've owned a Kel Tec, currently own a Kel Tec and will always own a KelTec. A fun gun that functions well for a great price! [bow]

I wish someone would make a inexpensive pistol cartridge carbine that would stay open after the last shot....I even like that in .22 autos.

I have had the Kel-tec PF9, the P32, the P3AT and the Kahr PM9. I thought the PF9 sucked. The trigger sucked and it was no fun to shoot. The P32 wasn't bad, but I sold that when I got the P3AT. The P3AT is a good carry option when you cant carry a larger gun like a Glock. But I do have to say the Kahr PM9 is far superior to the kel-tec line of pistols. It feels like a quality made gun. And with the polymer frame the gun only weighs about 14oz. The triggers are smooth and I can hit steel plates at 75 feet all day with the PM9. Its a pricey little gun but you get what you pay for. The PM9 has also just become MA compliant.

Kel-tecs are like upgraded Hi-points. i dont like the feel of them i would never buy a Kel-tec if it was the last gun on earth i dont care if their gun life is 20,000 rounds[rolleyes] there ar ebetter choices out there.

i rather own a Ruger then 100 kel-tecs

And I was wanting a PF-9....even thinking of selling my (paper clip) P-11 to get one. The PF-9 trigger is based on the P3AT/P-32 isn't it, how could it be THAT different?

When did the P Kahr become compliant? What did they do to it? BOTH lists?
I have heard that some people limp wrist Kahr PM9's just like Kel Tec P-11's....there both about 14oz?

For that matter, where's the link to the AG's compliant list....?

Just think of all those dumb cops that bought them as back-ups & off-duty!

Now that's some good news....but I - HATE - that safety. Did you read, it needs to be pushed up (not down) to fire!

ya i know, i was put off a bit by that also. i would never keep it locked if i had one anyway, since its a DA trigger. but i guess its the price we pay for having such a DB for an AG

The Kahr doesn't have that trigger safety like many/most other striker fired DAO pistols. But even so, a lever safety is still completely unneeded.
Leaving it in the 'up' position just leaves it there open to be unknowingly knocked down, rendering the gun useless in a stress situation. Just grabbing the gun from its holster could do that! Or the recoil from the first (or any) shot and your thumb hitting it!

And I am sure they are not advertising the 10lb trigger pull, that would also ruin an ultra light PM Khar.

All of that is likely repairable, through one means or another. [laugh]

I do not think that you will ever be able to change the direction of that safety.
On top of being useless, it's UGLY....lol.

And isn't it highly against the law to modify any "safety" device an a MA pistol? (trigger pull included)

And if you ever used it in self defense the state would look over the pistol very carefully....
Wouldn't any modification be looked upon as seriously as having a hi-cap mag in a 10rd pistol?
