So, I went to Stateline Gunshop in Mason, NH yesterday to buy a S&W442. I was talking to Paul, the owner, about getting a DPMS AR15.

He mentioned that the average back-order time for AR15's from DPMS was about 3 to 4 months!!!!!

I'm wondering if folks are preempting any future AWB legislation that might come from an Obama administration, or if it's just that they are a popular AR?

I want one - but 4 months!!!! At least it gives me time to save.

Keep in mind that the DPMS rifle does not come with any sights or optics, you'll have to drop some cash for those, if you don't already have that covered.

I ordered a DPMS LR-260 a while back. They said it would be 8 weeks. That was 4 months ago. I canceled.

The back order might be because they're filling government/military contracts first (DPMS = Defense Procurement Manufacturing Services).

Plenty of listings on Gun Broker.com.

Good news is that you'll get it in a reasonable amount of time.

Bad news is that you'll have to pay shipping and FFL transfer costs.

Never used Gun Broker. Are they fairly trustworthy?

Keep in mind that Sportical uses a non-standard upper -- no dust cover or forward assist. And, as others have said -- no sights. I got a nice DPMS from State Line for a little over $800 nicely optioned, and it had a standard upper receiver.

You wouldn't be dealing directly with Gun Broker, only individual sellers and FFLs.

I've made about half a dozen purchases through GB and have never had a problem with a seller.

As always, check the buyer ratings (not that they can't be fudged or faked).

There's a different circle of trust amongst gun owners and if someone gets burned by an FFL, word about it can spread pretty fast on firearms related forums.

If there's still any doubt, there's escrow services available...

Edit to add...

You can also use the GB search feature to find dealers/sellers close to you. That way you can avoid any shipping and FFL fees and inspect the gun before you buy

Is that .260 caliber? If so, just curious - why did you choose it over .308 in the smae platform?

I had the same rifle in .308. That thing was a serious 1/2 MOA shooter with Federal GMM. I just had it in my head the 6.5-308 (.260) would be a better rifle for prone matches (300-600 yds). I am still convinced it would be.

I had it on consignment at a local shop and it sold. I was tired of waiting.

That sucks, did you get something else?

As a matter of fact, I did. The same local shop that I sold my LR-308 at just got in the local PD's Remington 700P in .308. They traded it in for a Rem LTR (they wanted the shorter barrel).
I didn't need it, but what the hell; I had a credit burning a hole in their wallet.
At $425 I pushed the buy button.

P.S. How in hell do you quote multiple people in one reply?

I don't think the backorders are anything to do with the pending election. Most of the big manufacturers, like DPMS and RRA, have been backordered for over a year.
