I'm in the market for a new semi auto rifle, I am leaning towards an AR platform. I was wondering what your guy's favorite ones might be and why? It will mostly be used for target shooting. Let me also add, unfortunately one that is Ma compliant.

I love my Ruger Target 10/22 with a Leupold Scope. It only costs $.03 a trigger pull.

AR. I have a couple in 223 and love to shoot centerfire for short money. I also have a Model 1 Sales dedicated 22 rimfire upper on a Stag lower that I purpose built for 22 rimfire. The upper wasn't cheap at $580 but I have saved a bundle in ammo and barrels as I do most of my practice with it.

By far, if you told me I could have only one it would be my Garand. Period. I know there are more accurate, I know there are others that pack more firepower, but I'll take my Garand

AR. I have a Spikes 16" midlength upper w/ free-float rail, AimPoint PRO, VFG, light, and MagPul UBR. It's nice and handy, and the stock is wicked comfortable.

I also love my 10/22. I currently have a C-More STS (small red dot) on it.

My favorite would be my AR15 A1 build, triangle handguards, slick side receiver, chrome slick side bolt.....

I also love my Garand and M1 Carbine, but I wanted something I could shoot cheaply. The cheaper it is to fire the more I can fire it. In the summer I go to the range a couple of times a week and shott a couple of hundred times at $.03.

im tossed between my remington 552 22cal, and ar upper in 22
the remi will take 22short L & LR and just keeps on feeding and feeding a semi with no issues even with shorts, come on and today we need special LR ammo for our 22LR uppers. really WTF
my tactical solutions 22LR upper takes secound, it feeds all that I have fed it except some old russian junoir ammo. I can run about 500 rounds before it needs a quick clean.
I also find the mags need a good cleaning as thr bullet lube seems to gum up on the lips of the mag

This is kind of like asking which of your kids is your favorite.

I don't much care for my SKS, AK, or FAL. But I'd have a hard time choosing between my M1 Garand, M1A, M1 Carbine, AR15, and 10/22.

In my opinion you can't go wrong with a sks. Cheap all around in price not quaility. I know you were leaning towards and AR platform with the sks you dont have as many options but there are still quite a few. With the abondance of cheap surplus ammo you will save a ton in the long run but its all personal preference. Just shoot as many different guns and calibers as you can and see wich you like most. Good luck in finding the one just right for you.

I've got one. I just don't see the attraction. Slow to reload, due to top loading. Trigger is meh. Sights are poor. Hard to mount optics.

I agree with all this except for "slow to reload". While it's not as fast as an AR, it's certainly not cumbersome to reload once you've got the hang of it. The last time I shot my SKS before selling it, I put like 400 rounds through it in 3-4 minutes.

Get a AR-15 A2 Style, the flattops are nice until your optic gets destroyed, plus you CAN add rails to the carry handle of the A2 anyway. a win-win IMO

but deff. go with the 556 AR, If 30. 06 was still cheap and common I'd say get the Garand, but in the end the AR will be more satisfying. its much more versatile.

barrel length depends on your environment, if you plan to hunt get a 20 inch barrel, if its SHTF/home defense, I'd personally go with a shorter barrel I.E. 16 inch.

55 gr. works magically with the 20inch, it was reported to take off limbs in Vietnam, but for the carbine lengths id go with heavier round, 66. gr and up.

THey tend to use heavier rounds in Iraq and Afghanistan, but they get mixed reviews

What he said. I'd add my M&P 15-22 to the list, lots of fun, very cheap to shoot, and great practice for the .223/5.56mm AR-15.

That's pretty wide open question there. At least You narrowed it down to target shooting.

Ruger 10/22 maybe?

I guess those who run a backup rear sight and put their optics on QD mounts are just dumb.......

And end up with an abortion that doesn't let you have a correct cheek weld on the stock. Good idea.

LOL!!!! Where did you hear that, down at the VFW?

Not by the dead towelheads

I've never been much of an AR15/M16 fan but I am fairly familiar with them. I like my commercial (1960's era Plainfield) M1 carbine a lot as well as my Beretta Cx4 and of course my Ruger 10-22 which is a good choice from a standpoint of economy. Also there are plenty of after market accessories for that particular platform. I think you would be hard pressed to find something better than the 10-22 for your purposes. Get proficient with that, and then move on to a center fire rifle.

Another vote here for the S&W M&P 15 22. I have had one for a few months now, and have had a lot of fun shooting it. I have an NcStar red dot mounted on it, co-witness with the iron sights.
