Ruger revolvers in 22......loook for a ruger sp101 in 22........good guns.

^^this
or an LCR in 22. The s&w 617 great too but pricy IMO.

1. good to know thanks...i think i would like to stick with the da revolvers though...easier for the wife and this one will probably stay loaded in the safe plus a compact wouldn't take up much space leaving room for it's future brothers [smile]
2. don't know much about the brands thusfar...are there specific brands to stay away from?
3. i should have said it's not on the approved roster i'm assuming

Fyi we cant have loaded guns stored in MA. It would make far too much sense.

I'll have to jump in here. I'm presuming that you want to get a handgun for home defense. I would suggest a .38 revolver with a 3-4" barrel. Easy controls, you can get powder puff loads for the range so you can get lots of practice and defense ammo is readily available. I would also splurge and grab a .22 revolver as well. Many others have suggested a ruger or a S&W. I can't argue with that. If you're near the north shore, I'd be happy to take you shooting at my club and let you try out a few different handguns.

Mass compliant is only for dealers to sell .
Easy easy way to see what you want after a .22 is go to a gun show out of state. Figure out what feels good in your hand and what you think your body type can conceal.

Then see if you can meet up with some one to try it out at a range .

But def get a .22 to learn on.
I'd say get some thing like the ruger 22/45.
Some might flame me for it . But I'd avoid a sr22.
Only reason I say that is I think you'd have move fun with the ruger mark series or the 22/45 . Longer barrel etc so you could set it up later to be a real good shooter etc. The sr22 I'd get as a second .22 pistol.
It's good for a pocket plinker in my book .

I messed up I bought a 1911 at first so I was dropping big cash buying .45 to learn on . Then I got really into rifles .

It was till this past year I got a nice smaller summer carry gun.
Xds45 .

i have both and like both the sr22 and 22/45 w 5.5" barrel. However the 22/45 mark iii needs work out of the box....mag disconnect removal -> bushing + new front sight thats actually visible = another 50+ $ in parts....but i agree the 22/45 is waay cooler.

also the 22/45 is such a PITA to takedown/reassemble i dunno for new gun owner if its feasible. The sr22 is a breeze.

Definitely agree on the 22/45 not being a great first gun. I have one that I use to teach, and that post is spot on. Get a 22 that is similar in ergos and controls to the gun you plan to carry or whatever you plan to do. Get comfortable with all the other stuff you need to get good at before you waste $ on ammo learning recoil control. ;)

Yeah......guys get a little touchy around here about that one! [smile]

And as far as brands of revolver......most guys here will tell you stay away from anything other than smith and ruger

thanks...that's good to hear cause those were the 2 brands that i was looking at (43c and lcr)

maybe i smoked too much crack again.....i thought there was something in the MGL about having to store a gun unloaded? or is that only transportation?

i'm pretty sure it's just for transportation...crack is whack [wink]

thanks...i'm leaning towards the .22 revolver first (43c or lcr)...then a semi auto next (leaning towards a sr9c or sr40c)...and i think a .38 revolver may be my 3rd (lcr or one of the s&w j frame series .38s)...i'm going to need to look at a bigger safe [smile]...thanks for the offer, unfortunately i'm on the south coast

i got that, so the liability is on the dealer in a new firearm purchase as far as compliance goes...i just read the compliance thread again but i just want to make sure...as far as a used in MA handgun private party sale goes, if i buy it in MA the liability is on the seller, correct?...as long as i'm not over 10 rounds in a post 98 mag i should be ok...basically if i buy it in state it's legal or at least the liability isn't on me?...doesn't matter if it's a post 98 handgun, correct?

why out of state?...more choices just due to less regs?...so then if i found something i like that was non MA compliant i would need find it in MA and buy it used from a private party cause a dealer wouldn't transfer it unless it was compliant or pre 98?

my dad has a long barrel .22 that i can borrow whenever i want so i plan to take that for a spin along with my buddy who has some guns when i get my license

well my wife and i just picked up our licences...i already picked up hearing protection for both of us as well as a dac sportsafe...so i guess it's time to go to the range to shoot some different guns...i'm leaning heavily towards the sr9c right now just from online research on here and elsewhere...but my wife wants a .22 snub revolver just due to simplicity and size...i am going to try to talk her into a longer barrel revolver for accuracy (still only holds 8 rounds though) or a sr22 if she is comfortable with the extra manipulation of a semi auto (since it holds 10 plus it has a safety)...we'll see how this goes

THere is a reason revolvers come in different barrel lengths. What will the purpose of the revolver? Home Defense/Range longer is fine.......if she plans to CC the revolver teh snubs are the way to go. Just something to keep in mind. Many new shooters post on NES looking for advice on what they should get for their first handgun........to which we will need to know the intended purpose in order to make a recommendation.

Now......sounds like she is set her mind on a revolver due to simplicity of action.......excellent decision in my opinion.......my wife went for a 38 snub smith 642 for her carry/defensive gun.let her shoot a 22 at the range.......and definately rent a 38 special snub as well before you buy that 22lr revolver. If she is not recoil shy and can shoot a 38 special revolver pretty well I highly recommend you NOT buy a 22lr revolver for defensive purposes.

I would have your wife shoot an SR22 before you make a decision. They are a good gun and are similar in function to larger caliber guns

i want her to be comfortable shooting any gun we end up owning...as for the .22 i'm still up in the air, that will depend if i can sway my wife into an sr22, sp101, mkiii or 22/45 and out of a snub .22 revolver...the main selling point will be the 2 extra rounds in 3 of the 4 other choices plus increased accuracy of a longer barrel in all 4 other choices...the drawbacks will be little heavier & larger gun as well as more to do to shoot it (aside from the sp101)...if i can get her comfortable with any of those at a range then she may warm up to the idea...since we both work out of state and she is a teacher, we both probably won't carry much but if we decide to she may still end up wanting a snub at some point...i'd much rather have something that is more fun at the range but she would rather have something simple and small...once i get her to the range we'll see if i can change her mind

Good plan. Let her have fun with the 22 choices......but don't let her get away without at least trying a 38 snub revolver. IMO they are one of the best defensive CCW guns out there.........simple.....MOST reliable........powerful.......hell they even LOOK awesome! drawback can be the small sight radius and smallish sights. If you can get a shooter to be able to figure out how to shoot a snub 38 (j frame smith, ruger LCR, ruger sp101) then they will be well armed if they chose to CCW a fire arm. I carry a sp101 ruger but in 357 magnum.........i shoot it very well and fell confidant with it.

thanks...i think my buddy has a .38 snub so i'm going to try and get him to go with us to save on rentals...all the info and members on this forum have helped me learn a ton!...i keep changing my mind as i go after learning more...guns are similar to motorcycles in that they all have different features and uses...it's about finding the right one for what you plan to use it for

the MKIII and the 22/45 MKIII are substantially heavier than the SR22. I have 1 of each if you wanted to try them. The only problem is I am in Worcester which i think is a long ways from you.
I also have a snubby 38

Ok so I went to a shop today and the guy at the shop swayed me towards a g19 so now I'm between a g19 and an sr9c...def going to get the sr22 though...if I ever start to carry a lot I really liked the p938 but that's down the road at the moment...going to go to another shop to look more and get more prices

Shoot many different guns, find out what you like. Personally I would say glock, M&P, Ruger or sig. Best of luck

It all depends on how much cash you have. If money is no object, Glock, H&K or Sig, but if money is in short supply then the SR9c would be a good choice. I did have two S&W M&P pistols, the 9mm Shield and the full sized 9mm but because of all the problem I had with them I really can't recommend any M&P pistol.

You really, really can't go wrong with a G19, IMO they are a great all around gun and honestly very easy to conceal - once you get over the initial feeling that the gun has to fit in your pocket to carry (which is natural for a new shooter). As far as other options in the price range of the Ruger SR series, I recommend adding the Sig SP2022 to your "check out" list. I am not a big fan of external safeties and this gun is extremely affordable and is as accurate and reliable as the P series Sigs. Have fun and good luck!

I say stay away from a .22 anything, the ammo is tough to find and when the SHTF again it will be impossible to find. It's the first caliber along with 9mm to disappear, but I'd go with a 9mm first.
Go with a Glock, M&P's are awful, trigger is disgraceful even with a trigger job. just can't go wrong with a Glock.
