Did you folks know that there are many many MANY Christian folks that consider themselves conservative- they vote Republican, they dress "modest", the whole nine yards- and yet they believe that self-defense with guns is not having sufficient "faith" in God? They wouldn't have a gun in their homes at all.

But they aren't crazy nutjobs, they hold jobs and have hobbies and otherwise act like most everyone else. Except for the going to church 2-3 times a week part. And a few other things. I used to be one for 18 years or so but then I stopped a good part of their stuff & started to go back to what I would have been, not having known those folks [smile]

Some see it as hoping god will protect them, with others its because of the "thou shalt not kill" commandment. Which, in reality is really "thou shalt not murder" with murder, holding the same definition that we hold it to today. So really, self defense is perfectly "legal" under the bible.

Bingo. Yay for stuff lost in translation.

Yep. It's funny, because I knew about that verse even then, I agreed with what you said- but I seriously thought it just wasn't trusting in God to defend yourself with a gun. As if you could slide along and get C's, but really you better try and shoot for the A's because you never know when you might have to cash in those brownie points for some really serious trouble that might come along down the road. That's the kind of teaching many churches do- if you stay pure enough and follow the rules enough and have enough faith, then God will just take care of everything. If God doesn't bring a thing right into your lap then it wasn't His will. So if you're home alone or have to take a bus in the city late at night, then if you just have enough faith and stay full of the Holy Ghost enough and don't think bad thoughts then nothing bad will happen, or you will be miraculously saved. And if something bad does happen, why then somehow either it was God's will in some inscrutable way, or it's just an example of how the rain falls on the just and the unjust, and wicked mankind allows for evil things to happen that God never intended.

I'm guessing that this is more of a Northern states thing.

And you know, I'm not saying God doesn't intervene to help His children in bad situations. I've seen it more than once. But I also see more how I'm just HERE in this life, and what I do with it is just what I do. No, I get it now. [smile]
