found this in a decades old spam can of 30-06; but while it appears to be 30 cal, it’s not 30-06. Weird headstamp with the male gender symbol!

Thanks

Google Lens to the rescue

Google Lens to the rescue

Good catch. I tried lens but didn’t see this. The picture on that link does show the gender symbol as an example. But still doesn’t tell me what round it is.

That’s one of the only calibers that would make sense since I had a K98 years ago. But, I can’t find a headstand match and the round length doesn’t match a reloading manual’s dimensions.

Is it def a 30 cal round? What else is intermediate projectile and short case, but also rimless?

That symbol is also used to indicate Mars.
The interwebs say:

A Mars symbol on a bullet casing typically indicates that the ammunition was manufactured by the "Federal Ammunition Company"; the Mars symbol is a common logo used by Federal to identify their products on cartridge casings.

czech 8mm mauser?

That's my guess. Bullet diameter is close enough to 30 cal that it can be hard to tell the difference visually. 8mm Mauser usually runs a little over 3in. for OAL, depending on the bullet. For my handloads, with 170gr bullets I run around 2.95 OAL, but with 200gr bullets I run them at 3.15in. OAL. Plus, the case length here looks to be slightly less than 2 1/4in. which is right inline with 8mm Mauser (which is 2.24in. max case length).

Headstamp Codes – International Ammunition Association lists the following for a code of '12'

12Not a manfuacturer’s code, but rather a load identification code used by Pretoria Metal Pressing Ltd Pretoria, RSA on brass cases14
12O.J.F. (Osterreichische Jegdpatronenfabrik) Kremsach

I'm assuming '50' was the manufacture year.

Hope that's useful...

ETA: Looking through that website is interesting. (116) 7.92mm Mauser – Military Cartridges is their compilation of 7.92x57 headstamps, some of which are interesting. Like the blank headstamp on a "clandestine" 1914 contract for the Ulster Volunteer Force through Hamburg. At least that one I understood - there's another 7.92 Ball Type X made by Dominion Arsenal Canada for "clandestine CIA and Special Forces" contract. The headstamp is marked 1944, the contract is from the 1950's. :)

Website author states it's a compilation of crowd-sourced data, so a cartridge not appearing on their list just hasn't been documented yet.

Similar in some ways, but not exact match:
