Work is really slow and I'm bored as hell. I'm trying to decide on a new rifle. Budget is $600-$800. Leaning more towards a semi auto, but I'm open to anything. I'm still on an FID for a few more months, so my options are kind of limited. Picking up another Mosin off a buddy today for dirt cheap. I almost considered saving a little more and finding a used Bohica .50 BMG [smile]

I love my Mossberg MVP in .308 Great rifle, accurate and it takes any M14/M1A mag as well as AR10 magazines. They also make one in .223

Are you leaning towards on cal ? I see some really nice 22lr target rifles from time to time for your price range. There's usually a very good selection of very nice older bolt guns out there.

For semi auto 22s the remington 552 speedmaster is a great little gun. Not sure how well the newer ones are made but the older ones are pretty solid and accurate.

For .22's, I have a 10/22 and my great grandfather's Savage. I'm leaning more towards bigger calibers (.308, 5.56/.223, .338, 7.62)

M1 Garand. It's a semi auto in your price range that you can own with an FID

Yes 730$ right to your door.
I keep looking at the savage offerings. Them seem to have a lot to offer in the 300-500 range leaving a little room for optics.
A few CZ offerings have my interest also.

My friend found a savage model 12 in 223 for $800 it's a heavy gun for its size. Even with the cheap tasco scope he has he's banging out 1" groups pretty well with PPU and black hills match.

If you don't get a garand in your given situation you are a bad person and unAmerican.

Yeah! Wow that's heavy..... I'm pissed I waited so long to buy a M1. My first one was a SG 495$

Quick update: picked up a Mosin off my buddy for $50 haha. Held his International Harvester M1 Garand and it felt great. My only concern is other than CMP, where can I buy ammo? I haven't even thought about dishing out the cash for reloading stuff

Don't you need a special load for it? IIRC there's something you can buy to modify the internals so you can shoot commercial loads. Regardless, I'm a Garand noob and need to do more research

Yeah you need an adjustable gas plug. I never bothered with that since HXP 30-06 ammo is cheaper than any new commercial 30-06 ammo anyway. Currently 60 cents per round shipped from the CMP. That includes bandos and clips too. Great deal. I'd highly recommend a Garand as you get a lot of rifle for the money. Ammo isn't cheap but any larger caliber ammo is going to demand a higher price.
