Help me find a new rifle!

If i was likited with an FID, id probably go garand , or if you really want to go big , a 50 cal barret or something
A Barrett is way out of the picture. I was looking at the single shot Bohica rifles. There was someone in the classifieds that had one up, but it was deleted

Nothing wrong with a nice lever gun too. 30-30 is accurate and has some serious knock down power. Or get one in 44 magnum and when you get the LTC you can have a wheel gun and rifle in the same caliber.

Don't you need a special load for it? IIRC there's something you can buy to modify the internals so you can shoot commercial loads. Regardless, I'm a Garand noob and need to do more research

If your going to buy something other than HXP or the commercial made M1 safe ammo might as well buy the gas plug from garand gear.

I don't understand the mentality of shooting some other commercial ammo.
HXP is 60 cents per round shipped in the 194round tins. You can buy up to 10 tins of HXP per year.
PPU makes brand new M2 ball clone for 70 cents per round.
Creedmoor,Hornady,Federal all make M1 safe ammo to. Although it closer to 1$ or more per round.

All other 30-06 I see is more geared to hunting and almost always is 1$+ per round.
If you buy a cmp M1 field grade is 630 service grade is 730 shipped.
Buy a few tins of ammo and then start saving for a press.
You don't need anything fancy. A good single stage press and a 40$ die set and your off to a good start.

Ahh yes how could I forget about lever guns. I have a Henry Big Boy 44 mag and just sold my Henry 357. They are a TON of fun to shoot. I enjoy the blast and power of the 44 over 357. But 44 ammo will cost just as much as 30-06 if not more. I reload as I would go broke otherwise. But 357 mag ammo can be had for as low as $20 a box.

So a 308 garand, a .357 lever gun, are both good options,

308 M1 from cmp will run you $1030
If you can find a M1 with a worn out barrel for a good price you could easily install a 308 barrel and finish ream the chamber. Although unless you got the tools won't really save much vs buying a cmp 308 M1.

There really is not much difference you can pick up LC M80 for around 65 cents per round but which ever you choose stock up. I try like bell to have at least 3 years of ammo I generally shoot on hand.
For me that's about 600 rounds a year for the M1 garand...so having 2k on hand and refilling every 10-15 months keeps me shooting... basically I will order 2 tins every 2nd tin I open.
I reload for M1 also but only shoot the reloads in matches. That's about 300-400 rounds a year.
I don't have anything in 308. If I did I would have built a M1 garand in 308 by now. I also would reload for it. Almost any decent 150 grain bullet reloaded will out perform M80 ammo

I'd recommend 30-06 garand ($730), Henry big boy 357 ($700 shipped plus transfer fee), or a SKS ($300-$400??).

is the sks compliant as they have the model D i think that takes ak mags? and aren't there aftermarket magazine adapters for the sks to hold more than 10 rounds?

I,bought my sks on a fid when I was 19. That was before 1998 though?
Pretty sure though the sks can still be bought on a fid
Its a fixed mag design and needs to be modified for the high cap detach mag set up. Unlike the 10/22 that can easily have a high cap mag installed.

You could probably get a couple rifles for this budget.

I'd say get a Henry Golden Boy .22 lever rifle, a High Point 9mm, and maybe a used .223 of some sort.

Or, a Marlin 336 should fit into your price range.

Either of these options would leave a little left-over for ammo or a scope.
