I have been considering a Hi Point 9mm carbine because I'd like to have something in pistol caliber and I can't afford the Beretta Storm. Has anyone used one of these Hi Points? I've read a couple of good reviews in magazines and on-line I can, of course, find a whole slew of people who say this is the absolute worst rifle in the history of firearms as well as people who claim it is the best thing in rifles since the Model 94.

I'd like to hear from people who have actually shot one, or at a minimum have a good account based on a friend who purchased one.

I have one. It is very reliable, and eats cheap ammo that my pistols won't. It is also pretty accurate. My first day out with it, I was popping off soda cans at 50 yards with just the iron sights.

All that said, it is not a gun that we take to the range very often. It's not real comfortable to shoot, as the stock is a bit rough and rubs on your face. I know that sounds unmanly, but after a couple of mags you feel like you've been rubbing sandpaper on your cheek.

It is neither the worst or the best gun ever made. If you can find one for MSRP or less, it is a cheap and fun gun to have in the safe.

mclina, what ammo do your pistols not like? I know you have a lot of Ruger's so I am really wondering what ammo you have been having issues with. Tula?

The HP carbine is supposedly the best value carbine and competes with the KelTec Sub2000, which is hideous. You can also buy one that takes Glock mags which are always plentiful.

I have 2 Rugers, and the problem ammo was a case of Speer Lawman that I bought online. I can't recall if I tried it in my SR9, but my LC9 failed to eject every 2nd or 3rd round. The Hi Point has no problem with it, which is good, because I still have about 900 rounds of the stuff.

Isn't the KelTec the one that can use Glock mags? I thought the Hi Point only used Hi Point mags, or there are aftermarket (post ban) 15 round mags for it as well.

Yeah you're right, it is the Keltec that uses the Glock/ S&W mags. I believe they also use the Beretta 92 mags but I am still not sure.

I haven't tried Lawman at all so I'd be curious to know that their is some ammo out there that my SR9c won't eat. 2000rds later and I can't get her to jam, it's a wonderful CCW.

According to the article I read today there are 15 round aftermarket mags but they aren't reliable with more than 13 rounds and are post ban anyway so the point is moot unless i leave them in maine.

do you want the storm because you have a beretta? i can tell you that i got a sub2000 to match my 92fs and i love it. pre ban mags are cheap and readily available as well.
if you want the storm for other reasons please disregard what i wrote.

I have one in 9mm and I love it. Extremely accurate on the 75' - 100' range I use it at (haven't tried it at longer distances). I would say that my only pet peeves would be with the magazines (very cheaply made and I cannot find a quality 3rd party manufacturer) they are tough to load rounds into and they are tough to load into the rifle without extra attention given to make sure they seat well. But I would buy another in a heartbeat and I definately want one in .45acp. That you would buy another after 30+ trips to the range is an indicator on whether it is worth the $250 to buy it...

Partly it is because I like my Beretta and I feel confident with the quality of craftsmanship I know I will get, but I also like the way it looks. I've never really liked the look of many Keltec products, but the sub2000 is definitely on my short list of 9mm carbines. The Storm is pretty much out because the damned thing is more than an AR platform, and I need an AR more than I need a Storm. But for something between $250 and $400, either the Keltec or the Hi Point look pretty good.

Now for the big question, does anyone stock the Hi Point? I can buy one out of state if I pick it up in person, so NH and ME are OK for me, too.

I bought mine at Lee's in Hudson, NH. He sells a ton of them and usually has several in stock. He also sells them for MSRP, which is around $285.

My friend has the Storm and it's a real fun carbine to shoot and is dead on accurate. The MSRP is very high though and I realize why you don't want to spend that much for a 9mm range toy carbine. The Sub2000 is a nice choice as well, but good luck finding one because KelTec is backordered on pretty much every firearm IIRC. They are also more than the Hi Point which is more proven. For $285, you should definitely pick one up. I myself haven't shot one yet but I am sure I will want one when I do.

Yeah you do need an AR over a 9mm carbine, but there is never a rush when finding what you want.

I take mine out every couple range trips - it's a lot of fun. If your thinking about getting one and want to shoot one first. PM me and we can meet at HSC.

I have one with the ati stock that looks like the baretta. A buddy of mine is contemplating buying it if he backs out i will be reposting it here. I'll let you know.

There has been 2 group buys of these rifles on here, I'm surprise there haven't been more reviews/opinions on them.

The few reviews seems to be positive.

I believe there's another possible group buy planned for October (?).

Friend of mines son got one a few weeks ago, he says he loves it. I haven't shot it, yet.

Love hate relationship. People that don't own one see it and say its ugly, etc.. People that buy one end up loving the thing because it's pure functional fun... Shove in the worst ammo made and it eats it up and asks for more. Accuracy is surprisingly good (I attribute it to the factory iron sights which are excellent). Buy one... have fun.
