I only ask because I have a Remington in .308 that I cant get the copper off the lands.
I bought this used and it didn't have this issue. I shot maybe 300 rounds, cleaning every tiime
I left the range, but never noticed the build up. The short barrel did get hot once or twice using factory ammo.

I've used 3 or 4 different solvents, different brushes, let them soak, even tried Foul Out.
And the copper doesn't come off.
I retired Army and just can't call this clean.
Am I just being too fussy? Is one solvent more powerfull than another? I just can't put this away...

Hope this is the right section

I used sweets 7.62 cleaner, its pricey on my CMP garand after many many failed cleanings. It still took a few cleanings until the patch stop turning blue.
I hear you get very goodresults with http://www.eabco.com/KG12Copper.html I have not tried it yet. When I run out of sweets 7.62 I will

Yes definitely get one of the dedicated copper solvents and follow the directions. If using a brass jag for cleaning, the solvent will also take off some of this - so be sure to clean the jag often (I use standard Hoppes on the jag....)
I have tried Sweets and another brand that slips my mind at the moment. (have sweets now). Lots of patiences is needed, and truthfully I am not sure I have ever gotten mine to come out totally clean (no blue).

I use Shooter's Choice Copper remover followed by JB Bore past .It should get 98% of the fouling out . If worse comes to worse the Foul Out system by RCBS works wonders but is slow.

I would settle for some blue patches, but I can see the copper looking down the muzzel.
All the solvents I use are "copper" type. I usally only use the jag and patch after the bronze
brush. I have even tried a stainless brush with no difference.
My normal solvent is Hoppie #9 Copper, went to Shotters Choice and it seemd stronger on other barrels
but no joy on this one. I tried 2 non petroliem products, think they were some sort of citrus and they
truned almost everything blue, interesting. But still I see copper.
Bore paste sound interesting, is it thick like toothpaste?
I hasitate too go back to Foul Out 'cuz I get a little weep between the barrel and reciever.
Any other thoughts?
Steve

There are specific solvents just for removing copper you don't say exactly what you use. There are a million types that sound good but may be just packaging. I know Hoppes makes a BR copper solvent, but there are some more agressive ones
(Montana extreme, sweets etc). There is one for sale by Jim Owens (jarheadtop.com) called KG-12 Bore Cleaning Solvent. He is a great guy and if he recommends it, I imagine it is pretty good.
I will be buying a bottle as soon as I am done with my Sweets.

JB bore paste was developed by a bench rest shooter to thoroughly clean out the copper fouling from his rifle. Made from vegetable products it can be had from Brownell's or Midway.

JB paste is good stuff - I use it extensively to clean the cyclindesr and cyclinder face of all my revo's - great for the burnt on carbon...

If you haven't tried Butch's Bore Shine I'd say give it a try. I used it not long ago to clean out a lot of copper from a barrel of mine and it worked great. It's quite potent and should do the job. It's also been highly rated on various sites like Cabela's which is one reason I started using it.

Copper plating will keep building, so it's good to get it out of there, then treat the barrel as if you are giving it its initial break-in. For removing copper plating without risk of damage to the barrel, KG-12 simply rocks. Can even be used indoors without gassing yourself.

mac1911 and BossHarley are right on with that recommendation.

How does it shoot? I just cleaned my 308 tonight the first time in over 500 rounds. It was still very clean and the bore was nice and shiny but I do shoot moly.

I only use and sell Kano Kroil. If you use this it will creep behind the copper deposits and then they will come off. Kroil is a cleaner, break free and lubricant in one easy application.

Hmm. Copper plating is what he probably has after all that effort to take it off failed (and given it's a .308). I agree Kroil will lift almost anything off, but not if it's plated on rather than just deposited. He probably needs a copper-specific solvent, which means ammonia-based (and risky to the barrel) or something fancy like KG-12.

Well at the show I picked up some Butches Bore something shine,
and although its not fast , it is working!
I suppose the piont of impact will change, but I always like a reason
to go to the range. now if only that damn groundhog would have
helped
