How to chose front sight height?

I would like to replace the sights on my Colt 1991A Officer but I am not sure what height front sight I should go with? How do I pick the right height?

Here's the formula you need. Sight radius X amount of error in inches divided by distance to target in inches.

Agreed. 1911s are well designed. Stick with a stock front sight.

Should I measure the whole front sight or just the part above the dovetail?

You need to carefully match the height of both sights. So actually you would be better off to replace both sights as a set.

But there is a way around it. If you have an old style rear GI. take to a gunsmith like Dave Santurri he recently did 2 for me. I had him put fiber optic front sights on.

Either way as long as you measure them both the same way (if they mount the same). Your sights are great on that gun and you shoot it well. Why the change?
