Hey guys!! The ball & chain is going to cover me for a new firearm as my Christmas gift bless her soul. I've got handguns and long guns but lack a carbine in a pistol caliber. I could use some ideas for something reliable and under $1000.00. I would like a detachable magazine but I'm open for all suggestions. What say you? Ideas based on firsthand experience appreciated. I was thinking maybe a Baretta but I'm open minded. Help a guy make an informed decision B4 she changes her mind. Thanks and Merry Christmas to all!

Ever since I had shot the Marlin Camp Carbine in 9mm, I have wanted one. Classic rifle looks, non-black and killy, and it comes in 9mm or .45

I didnt have the cash so I went with the Hi-Point in 9mm. Fun and accurate but not a beautiful rifle.

The Ruger PC9 is also something I was interested in, never shot one theough. Good luck

I've had the Beretta CX4 Storm and the Kel-Tec Sub 2000, both in 9mm. Both are good choices but I had to sell one and so I had to sell the Kel Tec. If you get the Kel-Tec, you'll want to add a few accessories, some kind of a sight and change the rail. This will be another few hundred dollars.

You can get pre-ban mags for both but the Beretta ones are much easier and cheaper to get, plus I have a Beretta 92 so they can share mags.

So my vote is for the Beretta with the Kel-Tec second. You can't go wrong with either.

I have a Thureon Defense in .45 and love it. It's set on an AR platform and can take AR upgrades such as a Slide Fire stock option. It takes Glock Mags 23, some are made take Uzi mags. A bit pricey though roughly 800.

If you have a Glock get a Mectech upper for your Glock frame.

Affordable
You'll already have mags. (perhaps some prebans).
Mine has matched or outperformed any 9mm AR for a fraction of the cost.

ETA: available for 1911 as well. I just never considered it due to capacity option limitations.

The HiPoint is surprisingly fun to shoot. It's unlike other firearms; yes it's made cheaply, but it's reliable and built like a tank, not flimsy. And the trigger is not bad at all, at least as good as the factory CX4 Storm I had actually. I had a CX4 and sold it and now I have a HiPoint 45 caliber carbine. My only gripe is the magazines kind of have sharp edges. But you can use 1911 mags with a slight modification with a screwdriver.

I don't see the point of a pistol caliber upper, but if you're set on it I'd echo what others have said. Just do a 9mm upper and stick it on your existing AR lower. If you don't already have an AR to put it on, then my vote is stop looking at a neutered carbine and get an AR.

+1.

I read about these a while ago, and mentioned it to some friends at my gun club. One of my friends promptly brought in his .45 based one to show it to me. I'm buying one for my 9mm glock after Xmas, and will probably keep it with my GHB.

I love having a pistol caliber carbine and shoot it at steel matches throughout the summer. A club I shoot USPSA at is planning a pcc match in spring/summer.

I have a Hipoint, a Sub2k (Glock based) and a Lone Wolf ar lower. My take on each:

HP: dependable, accurate, fair (almost ok) trigger, comfortable to shoot, mag changes tough because thick grip, inexpensive to buy, limited mag capacity.

Sub2k: dependable (with Glock mags, not aftermarket), only fair accuracy, fair trigger, uncomfortable (for me) to shoot (terrible cheek slap), easy mag changes, fair price, preban full capacity mags available.

Lone Wolf lower (Glock based): just finished build, still working on dependability, prob going to have barrel ramped, accurate, ok (better than fair) trigger, comfortable to shoot, easy mag changes, got a great deal on used and unfired lower with 10.5" barrel (I had an unused upper), preban full capacity mags available.

I have shot a Beretta once and was not impressed given the price point.

If I was looking for my first with a $1000 budget, I would go with a dedicated lower and modified Uzi mags. If I get the bugs worked out of my Lone Wolf then my preference may change. I like the idea of matching carbine and sidearm mags.

With that said, I love shooting my Hipoint, other than the mag capacity and slow mag changes.

Several years back I bought my wife the Beretta CX4 carbine 9mm with a dozen pre-ban hi caps and a Bushnell red dot. She absolutely loves that rifle. No issues after several thousand rounds. She can make a smiley face on the target at 50 yards with it. It is like shooting a .22.

He's in Mass and I think those are illegal here.

Buy a caverns lower . Hit up Hahn for mag well blocks .
45 grease gun .
They also sell a sten mag well for 9mm .

With the grease gun mags or sten mags you can load then with a lot of different rounds .
10mm .460 Rowland work out of the grease gun mags . There's entry of others too .

Why would it be illegal ? You can convert a pistol to a rifle back and forth all you want as long as it starts as a pistol.
The mag is in the grip so you can have things on it that you couldn't with a ar15 .

And you don't have to file a fa10 every time you swap between a pistol and rifle btw.

Dude theCX4 storm in 9mm is a gem. I love mine. My wife shoots it all the time as well. Really an underappreciated carbine.

i also owned a hi point 995ts but sold it since i wasn't shooting it anymore. the kel tec sub2k is a nifty carbine as well, but not my style (feels too flimsy and comes bare without features).

the just right 9mm is interesting but i don't care for the overall feel.

the other reason to go CX4 storm is it uses 92fs magazines, which are everywhere including cheap pre-bans. since i am a 92G fanatic, the CX4 storm is a natural fit for me.

people pay equal $$ for a glock 19 and CX4 storm in this god-forsaken state....that is tragic. the storm's machining is top notch.

Cool, thanks for the clarification.

I fixed my post has to start life as a pistol ....

I thought I had seen something here about it not being available in Mass, which is why I worded my post as I did. I'm not sure what thread I had been thinking about but I couldn't find it.

I googled threads here regarding conversion kits and saw that Boris has one. Looks good too.

I was gonna pick one up for my 1911 but I shifted my focus to just building a underfolder ak in 45 lol . Figured it be for fun with grease gun mags .

I Had a sub 2000, I sold it. We have his and hers 9mm cx4 storms. Very easy gun to shoot well. Many thousands of rounds thru both and almost never any issues. Easyish to find pre ban mags. Also easy to change over for lefty shooters.

Sub2000 carbines aren't for everyone. I've seen some people have a really hard time getting used to the cheek weld, sights and the overall style of the gun.

Myself I've enjoyed mine from the first day I shot it. 33 round Glock mags are great and the fact that it folds in half is a bonus. It's definitely a gun I recommend people try before they buy though.

I've also got a Ruger PC4 that is very accurate and fun to shoot.

Thanks for the input. I have a black gun as well as everything from wheel guns to front stuffers. I'm not a collector and as it stands I only shoot a few of my firearms on a regular basis anyway. I just thought a little carbine might be fun. Good house gun for the wife and I load for 9mm and .45 already. I don't want to convert the AR as it has its role and I don't want to build a or buy a new one.
I already have a 92fs and magazines and there seem to be some decent reviews here so I might look at a storm. Pretty funky looking but so do most pistol caliber carbines I've seen. I'll have to see if anyone at the club has one I can try.
Thanks!

If you don't find a person American Firearms School has them for rent
