Ideas for a carbine in 9mm or .45

Dcmdon and warwickben

I am using both Glock and aftermarket mags. Had an issue with the lower that Lone Wolf took care of. I just did a few quick checks to make sure lower issue was fixed. That is when the other issues popped up.

I didn't read all the posts here, I'll just add my experiences based on what I've owned. My 1st experience was with a Thompson semi in 45acp, fun gun, had a blast shooting it, but It just sits in the vault now. It was too heavy, a pain working with the magazines and just a little awkward for me to actually be a reliable weapon should I need it in a hurry. Next came the 9mm Hi Point... loved it!! Absolutely a blast to shoot, functioned flawless, very accurate, minimal maintenance.. but like I heard from others, a little ugly.. but from a function and reliability, not to mention, cheap as hell... I wouldn't hesitate to own one. ... Just thought of the one thing I didn't like... the 10rd magazine was not easy to work with.

Next up is my Colt.... AR15-9mm. That is absolutely my favorite. It's a pre ban, I picked it up for a great price in like new condition. Picked up several hi cap mags and just love everything about it. Flawless operation, accurate and easy to maintain. I also installed the slide fire stock... works awesome!!

My last 9mm carbine would be an Uzi... another really kewl gun. Lots of fun, works great, plenty of magazines easily available. Can be had for under $1000.. don't count this one out.

One more carbine I own may be a great option.. I know I saw several references to the Berreta CX4 Storm, I have it in 45acp and love everything about this one.... again, flawless running, accurate, easy maintenance. magazine options are available in 45acp. I have to say, I want the same gun in 9mm... keeping one eye open for a deal...... I think they can be had for under $700 if we look really hard

That's all I got for now...

I picked up a Keltec sub2000 in 40 recently. I like it. Though it has some deficiencies. The two big ones are the sights are too low requiring a low cheek weld and the stock sucked (especially for 40 since the 40 packs more recoil).

So I have alleviated one of the problems. It cost me $11 and some time. Technically it will cost some more as I am not going to use the stock I put on it.

I really like the Sub 2000. Its crude but like a Sten or any other tube gun, effective.

A while ago I posted that I was running one with some success in a local pistol caliber carbine pin shoot. I mentioned this to KelTec and the guy on the phone got pretty juiced about it when I was telling him how I was beating guys with MP5s and ARs. I originally called because my front sight was canted a bit and he was planning to have that taken care of. But when I mentioned the competition, he volunteered to have the trigger taken down to the minimum acceptable spec of 3 lbs.

When I got the gun back, the front sight was perfectly straight and the trigger tested between 2.9 and 3.1 lbs on my Lyman digital trigger gauge. The gun was completely bulletproof.

I only sold it because post-Sandy Hook they were selling for stupid money on gun broker. I put it up with a starting price of what I paid for it ($275) and it went to over $800. No regrets. For that money, I'm 75% of the way to a Colt 6951 9mm carbine or a Sig MPX.

Wanted to get a Marlin Camp Carbine in 9mm but they are hard to find (no longer in production as far as I know).

Had a Beretta CX4 for I bit. Nice Carbine but a little big for shooting 9mm.

Also had 2 different Kel Tec Sub 2000 carbines. Ugly but highly functional (folds in half and only about 4 lbs), reliable and accurate to 100 yds. Can be had for less than half the price of the Beretta if you look around and if it is legal to buy where you live. Recommend.

I just thought I'd post that Stag Arms has come out with a new 9mm carbine. Its a standard AR15, but its good to know that there is an alternative to a Colt for those who don't want to build their own.

Although I've built more ARs than I can count, I am inclined to buy a pre-built 9mm gun simply because they can be cranky. As far as I know the makers of 9mm ARs include:

1) Colt
2) Rock River Arms
3) CMMG
4) Stag
5) Olympic Arms
6) Spikes ???
7) Lone wolf

Don

p.s. I also want to support Stag considering what they did when PA 13-3 passed in CT. After the law passed, there was about 36 hours before it went into effect. Stag pulled in 3 shifts and directed all production to CT dealers.

p.p.s XProducts has come out with a 50 round 9mm AR drum. It fits Colt mag pattern guns.

I see that PSA also offers several parts and build kits for an AR-9 as well. I wonder how their stuff is.

I wish it had a photo of the BCG to know if it is ramped or not. Decent ramped BCG's are $175-200 on their own. Still, I would end up changing out half the parts for high quality ones so it wouldn't be worth it for me even if it were in stock.

according to that thread on ARFCOM, the bolts are NOT ramped, but function just fine.

Everything that I have read says that is a contradictory statement. In order to run reliably with a non-ramped bcg, a 9mm specific trigger must be used. Again, pics aren't good enough to tell.

I believe that part of the benefit of the ramped bolt is that you can use standard AR15 triggers, which means you can use upgraded match grade triggers.

Without it, you are stuck with standard crappy mil spec style triggers as your options.

I've not done it, but have been told that you can ramp it yourself iwth nothing more than a vise and a file.

Otherwise Adco has been doing it for years. They charge $50.

Thought I'd mention the build-an-Uzi option, since I just finished assembling mine.

Parts Kit - $129 http://www.robertrtg.com/store/pc/MCKAY-ENTERPRISES-UZI-COMPLETION-KIT-22p2790.htm
Barrel - $99 https://www.gunpartscorp.com/ad/1289620.htm
Receiver - $225 http://www.mckay-ent.com/uzi/uzi-semi-auto-receiver-shell-85.html
Semi-Bolt - $239 http://www.mckay-ent.com/uzi/uzi-semi-auto-bolt-assembly.html

You'll come in under 1k with shipping, Mags, and a park-job on the receiver -- and you get the satisfaction of building it yourself.

+$200 for a stamp. Since a 16" barreled Uzi looks ridiculous.

Why

I have never before now wanted an Uzi, Why do I want one now?

I just ordered the TNW Aero .45. I'd love to find some preban Glock 45 mags but they are hard to find in MA. I'm putting an Ace Entry stock on instead of the stupid pinned MA stock.

I may get the 9mm pistol version at some point.

Using Glock mags is a plus, if I ever break down and get a Glock pistol. Unlikely as that may be..

Look at just right you can convert them with a few parts.

Or just build from scratch .

Only got 250$ in to it.

Why

I never wanted one until I saw you could build one for cheap. I wanted a good project, and this fit. Now that its together I love it! My kit from RTG was a really clean German M2 kit, which I thought was neat. I'm glad I built it!

That is going to be very cool! Did you machine the hand guard yourself?

If you can find one, I highly recommend the Marlin Camp carbine. I have the 45 ACP version and it is an absolute blast to shoot. Best of all, it takes 1911 magazines! I don't think they have made them since thelate 80's, but if you can find one, you won't be disappointed.
