Interesting article

I like this quote:
There is also something to be said for adopting the position that if a particular handgun is good enough to protect the citizens of your community, it's good enough to protect you and your family.
Replace the word handgun with the word rifle, and my rationale for having an AR carbine at the ready for home defense becomes clear.

What I like is the caption on one of the photos prattling on about how
such and such an agency uses the P229, when the gun clearly shown in
the picture above it is a P228. [laugh]

Errors aside, it did have some salient points... but the hidden tone was
something like "don't use that crappy hi-point you picked up at the
local gun show for $150, because even the lowest bidder guns used
by the police are 10 times what that thing is. Even a used police gun
is better than any junker class gun that's brand new out of the box, kid."
And I generally agree with this unspoken assertion proffered by the
article....

One factor not mentioned in the article... most LEO handguns have large frames/full-sized meant to be openly carried and usually aren't the best choice for concealed carry (even more so for smaller persons and/or seasonal clothing).

Put in that perspective, the authors logic could apply to scaled down/compact versions of the full sized firearms preferred by LEOs (assuming a smaller sized counterpart is available.

In all honesty, many times cops carry something because it was the lowest bid that met their specs. Specs which we know nothing about.

There are sometimes much better choices. Kahrs and compact 1911s come to mind.

It's all about the person, their holsters, and the way they
dress. Agreed there are some guns that don't carry well IWB, but there
are still a buttload of "duty" sized weapons that can be carried with the right
holster and belt, etc. More formalized clothing choices end up limiting
options quite a bit, though. Everyone's situation is different, though.

IMO I think the reason why most people downsize/down weight carry guns
is just to reduce the "pain in the ass" factor more than anything else. For
instance, my P229 conceals almost as well as my USP Compact, but the
USPc is "better" (for me) because it weighs less.. sounds dumb but after
lugging the gun around all day you notice that missing like 6 oz of weight real
fast. A buddy of mine basically gets irritated at carrying anything else
for long periods, so he ends up gravitating to a 642 hammerless. I was
doing that for awhile, but since I couldnt hit the broad side of a barn with
mine it was barely better than not having a gun at all. My marksmanship
was so poor with the 642 the only way I would have been successful in an
emergency was to jam the revo under the chin of the BG and pull the trigger...
and that's not very convenient or safe. [laugh]
