.410m IMO, is not a terribly viable HD choice.
Slugs are typically 1/4oz, or about 110gr. The Brenneke 3" magnums put out about 1700fps, and about 780ft-lbs of energy. That's roughly twice the KE of your average 9mm load, and enough to do some decent damage.
The problem, however, comes to your choice of firearms. I wouldn't touch the judge with a 27.5' pole. That leaves real shotguns. If I was going to buy a real shotgun for HD, it sure as shit wouldn't be chambered in .410. 12ga Brenneke slugs put out FOUR TIMES the KE of the .410 loads.
Also consider that the .410 is NOT a viable firearm to fire buckshot through. You get 2-4 00 pellets in a single column. They deform, and do funky things.
If you use it right, a .410 will kill a man. Then again, so won't a .22CB. That doesn't mean it's a good choice for HD.
ETA: To touch on comparisons to pistol calibers, find me a .410 handgun that's fed by 17, 19, or 33 round magazines then we'll talk.
