I'm looking to get an AR15, specifically to get into some longer range shooting with a black gun! I've been looking at preban stuff, used, new, and I think I've narrowed it down a bit.

For me it's not worth it for preban, so I'm looking for a MA compliant post ban, used but not abused.

Here's one I'm seriously considering but I'm not entirely sure if this price is a bit high. The seller is willing to split the shipping costs with me. Here's tthe details.

His ad states:
I have a DPMS Bull 24 Special for sale. This rifle is about 5 years old and has mainly been a safe queen. It has had about 400 rounds of match-grade ammunition down the pipe and has been well cared-for. This rifle includes a set of Weaver High AR15 rings and a BSA 6-24x Illuminated mil-dot reticle scope with rangefinder. For all the details of this rifle, please click on the link above, as this rifle is exactly as it came from DPMS (except this one comes with 2 20rnders instead of 30's). Asking price is $1,000 with the scope and rings or $925 without scope and rings. Private Message me or reply to this post with questions.

The seller won't go lower than 1000 for the set up with the scope. So do you guys think this is a good price? Do you think DPMS is ok? I was intending to find a bushmaster but this came up. The only thing I would want to add is a bipod.

I think the price is a bit high, and that BSA scope is crap.

If you want a set up like that get a RRA lower and a White Oak upper.

About the same price, it's new, and it's the best you can buy.

you could get a new RRA for about that $925 from Pete at ar15sales.com. pick it up and save on transfer, shipping, ...

the 20 round mags may not be legal in Nannychusetts

Yeah... if you are going for a post ban and wanna pay $1000, you may as well as jsut get a new one.

Most places you can find a nicely outfitted NEW post ban AR for around that price.

Yea, that's pretty much what I thought. I wanted some feedback because I'm new to the whole AR scene. I think I'll hold off and look around for a good used one in the $700 range or a new onearound 1000. Thanks for the help guys, much appreciated.

I was just checking out ar15sales.com and it looks like he has some really killer deals. Varmint A4- 24" Barrel $890, sounds like a good place to start. I'll have to swing by there next time up that way. Does he have a lot of stuff on hand?

It is not a store front and has no display area. Pete acts as a distributor. give him a call. I ordered a Varmint A4 18" in November. It took 3 weeks. you are welcome to check it out in Westford or Lunenberg.

I just got a nice, NEW, Bushmaster for less than $850. It's the AK model, with a nice muzzle break, and standard furniture. I like it a lot. It will do anything I need it to do. For the extra $150 you are going to spend, I could get a case of ammo and a couple of pre-ban magazines.

Just a thought, I sometimes think I would like a lighter weight barrel on my 20" AR15. I have the Bushmaster HBAR, and it is very nice but sometimes I wish there weren't quite so much weight on the front end of the rifle. There's places which machine the barrels down to new profiles, but you should try to handle a few different barreled rifle weights if you can to get an idea of what they feel like.

All great suggestions, thanks! The problem I have found as far as handling different AR's is that many shops I've visited don't have the long heavy barrel model I'm looking for. Mostly have 16" versions. I can always get the 20 or the 24 and swap out the barrel if I decide it's not what I want. I'll give Pete a call sometime and see what he can do for me.

Figure out the main purpose you are going to use this rifle for first - Carbine for per. def. 20" A2 for competition, 24" A4 for varmit, etc. Then we can stear you in the right direction.

Also, moving this to the firearms forum.

Wow, I am really starting to like the idea of a RRA lower and a White Oak upper. It can be put together for not a bad price. It looks like white oak makes some nice uppers. How much of a difference do you think there is between their match rifle uppers and the varmint uppers? The match upper starts at $662 and the varmint upper starts at $590. http://www.whiteoakarmament.com/

Anyway, I mainly intend to use this for target, and maybe the occasional "varmint". =)

**EDIT**
I forgot to ask, how hard is assembly? I am not a gunsmith by any means and I'm new to the AR15's. Although I am mechanically inclinded I would want some sort of assembly guide. I would even pay someone with experience a few bucks or a case of beer to give me a hand.

Is there a difference between http://www.whiteoakprecision.com/pricing-products.htm and http://www.whiteoakarmament.com/ ? Are these the same guys, whats the deal?

WOA is the parts / accersory side of WOP. If you want John to build you an upper it comes from WOP. If you want a complete upper already built it comes from WOA.

If you are not going to shoot match competition get the varmit in whatever length you desire.

A flat top lower? Sounds interesting!

As long as you're buying a complete upper, assembly of the lower is a breeze (actually, building your own upper is pretty easy too... you just need a few specialized tools).

Here's all the instructions you should need...

One suggestion, if you're going to build a match/varmint rifle, spend the extra $$$ for a two-stage trigger. RRA and Jewell make them as well as others (looks like Whiteoak has them too).

Ha ha flat top lower, it's all good. As of now I'm thinking the white oak complete upper as suggested and the RRA lower with the two stage trigger. I'm going to make some calls and see what they can do for me. I can't wait until I have this thing built and the warmer weather is here!
