Last year all the betas thought I was stupid for going after wild hogs with a K-bar.

Well, this year the girlfriend is joining me, and she is thinking of using a spear. But she is also thinking she might just use a gun. We will see.

I am using the K-bar again.

So, thoughts on good spears?

First one I found, LOL:

Just mount an M8 bayonet on your favorite AR15, so you can always pull the trigger if the bayonet fails.

Btw, I always thought bayonet is a good crowd control instrument for some unruly but not quite lethal situations. So may as well get some practice actually use one in a fight.

If using a gun, I would use my trench gun attachment.

I’ve always thought this was pretty ballsy. Back around 2000, there was a group called Brotherhood of the Sacred Hunt. They advocated using spears and other edged weapons as a means of getting back to our European roots. I hope you guys are successful and get yourselves a big boar.

Nice. Ill be down here killing some boars with the AK pistol, and 44 Mag lever and bolt guns. I might use the bow but thats as close Ill get.
Might use the Glock 21 or 20 if I get in the mood, my revolvers are still up north.....

Spears and knives just not my thing......but enjoy.

This is one of those risk/reward things. I'm not overly concerned about the hog, its that blade that could make things go south quickly if you dont know what you're doing. I'll still to blasters as I want to see my grandkids. [cheers]

The real danger is butchering it after the kill... @Broc Tuah

The real skills is taking one using the tusks of another

If you choke it out. you win!

From the Professional

Léon: The rifle is the first weapon you learn how to use, because it lets you keep your distance from the client. The closer you get to being a pro, the closer you can get to the client. The knife, for example, is the last thing you learn.

I am good with the blade.

Although I did stab myself later that night. I was cutting the quartered hog, removing some fat, bones and hairs. After some 2.5-3hrs, I was tired, knife slipped and went into my thumb.

Not a huge deal, I stopped the bleeding, but went to the doc for antibiotics and a Tetanus shot. That shit cost me. There is still a separate $450 charge from the doc (on top of the $2K+ hospital charge) that I refuse to pay until I get an itemized bill.

So, lessons learned:
1. Don't butcher when tired.
2. Watch your hand placement.
3. As Chris said, the butchering is the real danger.

Side note, a guy helping me skin one of the hogs that day also cut himself, but he cut himself really bad and had to bail out. Dude was going way too fast.

So the hog caused more injuries after death.

I was disappointed you never turned into Man Bear Pig... Sigh...

Girlfriend is now leaning toward bow or gun. She is afraid the spear, being harder to control, could injure a dog. She won't use a knife.

She is great with a bow and gun.

Zoobow for the win! In FL I think they are legal...

4. Chain mail glove.

It is so easy to do especially when you are tired. I have poked myself a few times doing deer over the years.

Daily Mail horror story about man and girlfriend devoured by boars while hunting soonish?

Broc, getting killed by bacon before it is bacon is not a good way to go.

If I go with him, I’ll make sure to film it incase of that!

I use the kevlar cut resistant gloves we have at work. Saved me a cut or two.

Long before they had them I wacked myself after a long day hunting in the Berkshires skinning a big buck.

When I hunted all day in CT and came home with a few deer early and couldnt hang them id just bring them to Jette. Better than spending a night getting sewn up and paying a medical bill.
