So... Anyone see Law and Order:SVU last night? If I haddn't had the baby in my arms with a bottle, I probably would not have watched, but I stopped surfing on that channel and caught the last half of the show.

From what I gather, a kid saw his mother shot to death and during the investigation the son ended up shooting the guy who did it. I don't know the details as I came in right after this.

So, the kid is on trial as an adult for murder one.

The defense lawyer brings into the trial some study published in "The Journal of Science" that supposably shows that people who witness a violent killing are twice as likely to commit a violent killing themselves.

I'm sure that this is just some made up drama fact, but it is presented cleverly so that the uninformed viewer might think it was fact.

What happens next is just a liberal fantasy...

In the middle of the trial, the DA tells the cop who just testified that "well, you have me convinced" and goes to settle the case with a plea bargan. Convinced in that she NOW thinks the study is valid, a point she was strongly against at the start of the trial.

So they are in court now to discuss the plea agreement. In walks this guy in a very rich looking 3-piece and delivers a motion to stop the trial so that the validity of the study can be argued in a civil trial before allowed as evidence in the boys trial.

This new lawyer is a hired gun (*snicker*) of the NGA, National Gun Association.

During the civil trial, the NGA lawyer gets the boy to self-incriminate himself and instantly, the boy's attorney jumps up and makes a motion to the judge of the criminal trial (who is sitting next to her at the defense table) that the criminal trial has to be dismissed because of 5th ammendment rights. The judge agreres, turns to the DA (also at the defense table) and says "any comments?" She says "nope". Then, after the trial judge declares a mistrial, the DA stands up and asks for the civil case to be dismissed as the reason for it no longer exists.

So, in the liberal view of the world, tehy had a orgasmic bliss...

1) The sweet innocent kid gets free
2) The gun lobby gets slapped
3) Some bogus 'study' gets legal precident.

I was almost spitting up more than the baby after this one. Next time I leave the remote where I can reach it.

Law and Order and most its variants, which are otherwise great series, are obscenely anti-gun. There was an episode where somebody used a MAC-10 clone that had been converted to full-auto. First there was a NJ(?) FFL who gave them a lot of attitude and BS about looking for the purchaser of the gun, as if he had a choice in the matter. (One of the detectives even says afterwards that the FFL's refusal would have only earned him a warning from BATF.) Then the gun turns out to be readily convertable to full-auto, but the BATF doesn't seem to have been interested in classifying it as NFA. Next they find out that the manufacturer deliberately made it that way in order to improve sales. Finally, after they nail the manufacturer in court (who gives a damn about the shooter?), the case is thrown out by an obviously biased pro-gun NY judge. A sickening statist fantasy from start to finish.

L&O SVU

First off, a NYPD officer coming into NY has no police powers and must link up with the agency in the town they are working. So their facts are slightly off. I've noticed many errors when they discuss their dealings with towns outside their jurisdiction. They really make it seem that NYPD is the only agency worht anything and all others must get out of their way.

In truth, all the NYPD people I've ever dealt with have been highly professional and a pleasure to work with at all times.

Maybe the problem with the show is that their sound stage is located in a former NJ landfill which I'm sure is loaded with toxic waste. Could account for the lack of accuracy....

And lastly, it's only a TV show. Facts have nothing to do with drama...Kind of like any of the mass media outlets.

Right, but the majority of sheeple will take it as fact. That's were the problem lies. Then when it's time to vote for a gun ban, cledus overhere remembers hearing on SVU that someone with a gun will shoot someone becuase his father used to hunt.

Only because you know they only remember bits and pieces of what they heard, but they do remember that someone will be shot, so we must ban the guns.

Sometimes I wonder if Washington is in bed with Hollyweird to get this stuff on the air.

TV----Truth or Dare???

Hollywood is most certainly in bed with the Democrates. Just look at the last election..

Juries now think you can submit a strand of hair and come up with a suspect in 20 minutes....You actually can...on TV....The same way you can get 20 rounds fired out of a S&W Model 10...without reloading...... [shock]

My GF got me into those L&O shows. I think there are 3 or 4 at this point. Anyway I'd be lying if I didn't find the show entertaining, but it does get under my skin when they start the soapbox anti gun preaching crap. There's definitely an underlying liberal message in every episode.

One that really pissed me off was when they raided the house of some militia type and found his "cashe" of "assault weapons". I think it was Ice-T (of all people) that held up an AR and said something like "now what would someone need this for?" Another thing that bugs me is I'm always hearing someone on the show say "clip".

I guess Mariska (Olivia) keeps me tuning in. :D

L&O SVU

I was all set to go to one of the tapings as they use a wraehouse not far from where I worked. I thought it was the original L&O and I wanted to see the actor who played the Prosecutor, Angie Harmon. Then I found out it was the SVU version which just started. I turned down the offer.

Well, I hesitate to say this, but for every gun error in Law & Order episodes, there are between ten and a hundred trial errors. Entertaining? Yes. Realistic? Hardly. Remember the disclaimer at the beginning: "The following story is fictional." You bet.

I thought it was common knowledge that you need an AR15 or equivalent to hold off hordes of mutant zombies which are surrounding your house and trying to eat your brains. Or wait, maybe that's only in the movies?

And I always thought it was a FAL you needed.

According to the Zombie Survival Hanbook, the three most ideal weapons are the M-1, M-1 carbine, or a .22 semi-auto rifle. you just need a headshot to stop the zombie, and the .22 is just as effective.

I'd quote the appropriate sections, but I loaned it to a friend. Apparently, he's worried about zombies out in Ware, MA...

I always though the M1 Garand was best for killing huge angry sharks that just ate your boat and your sailor buddies. I had no idea it was a potent zombie stopper too. Hmm.

+1 on the FAL but make it a carbine and add a 30 round mag to the package.

But you have to hit that 3000 psi scuba tank. The 150 grain bullet will not do the job alone...
[shock]

The Cap'n must of loaded his own cartridges and made them bazookas. [wink]

L&O SVU repeated the episode on NBC last night where the gun shop owner and his son were neo-Nazis.

There is no doubt that Dick Wolfe has both an anti-gun and anti-military bias.

Yes, there are plenty of police procedural and legal errors as well, but I watch L&O and L&O:SVU to be entertained, nothing more. That is all that it is, entertainment. The unfortunate aspect of all of this, is that far too many people today use entertainment whether it be talk radio or television to form serious opinions about life and politics. This lack of critical thinking skills and the ability to distinguish between reality and fiction is one of the key ingredients in what I perceive to be the general decline of American civilization. We could do a lot of fingerpointing and there is plenty of blame to spread around, but ultimately it is up to each of us to get the facts from as many different sources as possible, and from as many different viewpoints as possible and come to our own conclusions. Hence, this forum is an excellent stopping off place to get information, ideas and to exchange thoughts which are valuable in forming opinions.

I rarely watch TV, but one night I was baking Christmas cookies and had the tube on. One of these L&O shows came on, don't ask me which one (it was Sunday, I think), and it was a show -wait, I remember, it was the cold case show. Anyway, some boy had got a girl pregnant and somehow ended up dead, the baby was given up for adoption, her mother had found her, and she didn't want to have anything to do with the mother. The whole story centered around school, with a sick, twisted teacher berating the boy about the evils of abortion (note I'm not thrilled with abortion, that's a whole 'nother thread, but this was just plain sickening the way she berated him) - the whole program was so sexually and politically-correctly twisted I couldn't believe it. I'm sorry, but the world just doesn't work that way - and if it did, I'd definitely want to get off! [shock]

The garbage on TV is why I play on the internet in nice forums like this! :P

On a related note, I was watching The Simpsons, and the new show "Bones" came on. I reached for the remote, but something caught my attention:

Guy: "State your name."
Bones: "You know my name."
Guy: "Bones, you're making an official request to the FBI to carry a concealed weapon, you must do things officially."
Bones: *states her full name*
Guy: "Why do you want a gun?"
Bones : "To shoot people."
Guy: "Not a good answer."
Bones: "It's true."
Guy: "I'll put 'defense of myself in the line of duty'. Have you ever been charged with a felony?"
Bones: "Charged or convicted?"
Guy: "Charged."
Bones: "You know I have."
*Guy stamps a paper on his clipboard "DENIED"*
Guy: "Sorry Bones, you can't have a gun. You don't need to own a gun anyways..."
