How much weight would I need for a 30-06? The sleds hold up to 100lbs but that seems like a lot for this caliber.

I am not looking for zero recoil, just milder so I can get it sighted in better.

I use the original lead sled and it's awesome. Most of the time when I'm making sure my .270 is hitting where I want I don't use any bags. For sighting in a new gun I usually put 2 25 pound weight plates on the holder. I don't use the 50lbs so much for the recoil reduction but more for keeping the stand in place after every shot. The sled alone with no bags will really reduce the felt recoil, adding a bag usually results in something around and additional 25% less. The only time I have ever used 100 lbs was for sighting in a 375 H&H and it was well worth every penny for that alone!!!

Chuck Hawks has a good write up on how much recoil reduction is done with some rather legitimate numbers.

I think there are two variants and I have the smaller one.
I like the idea of weight plates.
I bag of lead shot is bound to tear sooner or later.
Thanks,
Bill

No problem, mine is the smaller one too, single bar version. If you don't have any weight plates already get 2 of the rubberized ones from Wal Mart, normal weight plates will work just fine but the metal on metal likes to slide around a bit.

I have the new lead sled ,with the double pipes. I bench shoot my RUGER NO.1 45/70 50 rounds at a time .I use no weight.little recoil.A little hard to get a good cheek weld because of the sleds rear support..

I don't believe I have shot any of my 30.06's off it, but 50 lbs was sufficient when I sighted in my 2 12 gauge shotguns using slugs. Didn't feel a thing. Best money I ever spent.

My 700 in .30-06 is not a bargain to shoot more than a few rounds. Bolt gun, right? I "solved" it with a Past recoil pad. I don't want to shoot it all day but it does take the pain away.

Hope that helps,

I couldn't find rubberized plates so tried to steel ones (25 lbs each) but a 25lb plate won't fit on the weight shelf.
