Les Baer firearms

I've heard nothing but great things about them... however being in MA they are hard to come by. Never fired one though. I'd buy one if we had the ability to in MA.

Yes and Les Baer 1911's are awesome. They are at the apex in every quantifiable category.
I've never fired any of the .40's or rifles. Good luck if you're in MA.

Someone from the Cape in The Want Advertiser was selling two of them !! $2500 & $3000 respectively , that must be one fine pistol to command those prices.

I like mine.

Only thing that ever went wrong was a sear that wore out really fast. Was fixed at no cost to me (not even shipping) and has been flawless since.

Doesn't like to run dirty. After several hundred rounds during a training class I got some jams, but sticking with clean ammo and cleaning after every outing I've never seen any issues since.

Front strap checkering was a little sharp in the beginning, but some passes with the file took care of that.

Was my "wedding gift" from my wife.

Wow a wedding gift , you're a lucky man lol I wonder what you get for your birthday ?

It's partially because dealers can't sell them in MA. FTF only. Low supply-> High cost.

True , but aren't the base models brand new around $1500 that sounds reasonable , but I know the top tier models fetch a premium but you can put any price you want on quality .

From what I am hearing, is it safe to assume that no other firearm holds a candle to the Les Baer firearm?

I wouldn't bet on that in 1911 land. There are a LOT of guns that compete head on with an LB.

Nah. Not true.

Les Baer are TIGHT and reliable. That takes a certain amount of hand tuning. However, you could easily take any 1911 and have it tuned. I don't think the parts are any more or less superior than anything else you can get on the market. It is the hand work to get the parts to very tight tolerances that boost the cost.

Take a S&W, send it to Larocca or Greg Derr and you can get just as fine a pistol. Might end up costing more in the long run as you may have to replace parts for a tighter fit.

I got a Premier ll in 1995, and used it for the LFI 1 course in 1998. It ran great with little cleaning and no problems. It is my most accurate (and most expensive ) handgun. I know one of our members here had the metallurgy tested and was not pleased with the results, but so far so good with mine.

That being said, there are many other fine 1911 style guns out there that I wouldn't mind owning if available in Mass.

Email Gregg Derr and ask his opinion. I shot one of the pistols he built,

good handling and good shooting. Caution, sometimes your paying for

a name. As mentioned, any 1911 can be tunedm, but at some point
you cross the line and can buy one already tuned for less.

I liked the one I had but I'm not sure I'd go as far as best 1911 out there. It was accurate but I had a Colt tuned nice for less, so it's just a matter of taste. And unless they've changed, it's shipped in a cardboard box which is pretty sorry considering the cost of the gun. When I resold it I got pretty much what I paid so it appears they hold value.

Definitely not true...Even if you're just referring to "new out of the box" 1911s, I wouldn't say that's true.

There are several other fine 1911 manufacturers around that put up just as nice, if not better, 1911s than Les Baer. Just a quick example or two...What about Wilson Combat? Or the MA friendly SVI? I've shot a couple SVIs before, and the one Les Baer that I've ever shot didn't compare to the SVI, but I'm sure others have different experiences.

No. There are plenty of semi-custom builders that make excellent 1911s (e.g., Wilson Combat, Ed Brown, SVI), and quite a few gunsmiths who build custom 1911s from the frame up.

Being the dork I am I am curious about the metallurgy results. any more info. PM if you prefer.

Rob has posted it here several times before. Suffice it to say that cold-rolled is NOT forged, or even remotely equivalent to it.

But, Les did state that he stands behind his product and did offer the buyer $50 off the full dealer price on a replacement gun that self-destructed when a case head ruptured.

I bought my Les Baer Concept V and had it shipped to Four Seasons. The day I picked it up and took it out of the box it was covered in grease inside and out. After wipeing most of it off I went to rack the slide and lock it open. Well, I tell you it was tight, real TIGHT. So tight that Carl had to do it! Take down you have to use a barrel bushing wrench to get the bushing out. Now I've owned many 1911's from Colt to S&W's to Wilson Combat, those seem 'loose' compared to the Les Baer. Anyway after more than 500 rounds guess what, it's still as tight as the day I got it. I don't fire it much as it's my safe Queen.
