Local News 2 teenagers shot and killed during fight near Westgate Mall in Brockton

Poverty breeds crime. No doubt about it. So do single parent households.
Crime breeds poverty. Toxic culture breeds poverty. I’m sick of hearing that poverty is the reason that these shitbags do this. Guess what demographic has the most people living in poverty in this country. If you guessed it’s the same one that’s committing most of the violent crime not per capita. You would be wrong. That’s a good indicator that crime is a culture and a race problem. Not a poverty problem.

I live less then a mile from west gate sadly

Depends on the area. Some of Brockton is fine. But it's like Fawl-Rivah. THe connotation of living in the city is bad.

I'd never consdier sending my kids to Brockton schools. I wasn't thrilled with the much-better (or used to be) Taunton schools.

When I was a kid ( under 13 ) we lived in the Brentwood neighborhood in Avon.
We used to walk to the Westgate mall all the time and to Sears as well. I remember walking to Sears to buy 45 records for a buck, and walking to the movies if we could scrape up enough money. Not a care in the world... Most of the time we would cut through DW Fields park, but walking right down North Main St or Montello was no big deal.
I remember one time my twin brother really wanted to buy a boomerang that they had at Child World. We saved up the money and made the walk. When we left. he couldn't wait to throw it. I told him we should take it to the baseball field or someplace wide open, but he wouldn't listen. First throw.. right up on the roof of Child World.
A week later we returned determined to figure a way to climb up on the roof. After a while, someone noticed us circling the loading dock and a guy came out and said "Hey, what are you doing!" Scared the shit out of us. When I told him what happened he said " Why didn't you just come into the store and tell us?" Something that never occurred to us. LOL
About 10 minuted later he comes back with a frisbee, and a red rubber kick ball and my brother's boomerang and gave them all to us.
This time my brother listened to me, and we walked to the closest school in Avon, the South Elementary School which is now the Butler Elementary School. Ralph Butler was the Principal when we went there. After about 20 minutes my brother managed to throw it onto the roof of the school... dumbass.. It was summer time and although there was likely a janitor at the school, no one answered the bell. We never saw that boomerang again.
My Mom used to take us for picnics in Fields park in the summer. They had picnic tables and hibachis set up along the bike trail and we would often go with the neighbor and their son who was the same age. Every trip included a climb up the stone tower on Tower Hill and when you got to the top saying "The British are coming!"
In the winter, Tower Hill was the best sledding in the area, except for Maybe Chemung School in Stoughton but Tower Hill was on a golf course so it was great.

In the late 70's Brockton was actually pretty cool. And it was pretty safe even for a kid. These days an 11 year old that goes to DW Fields Park alone would end up on a poster. Really sad.
I used to run through DW park with a buddy of mine regularly. 2006ish... as I was reading your post I cringed thinking that my son doing that now. Brockton is an absolute dump of a city. It's not the worst, it's not like you will be shot if you step outside every time it has just been a dramatic drop in quality in less than 10 years.

Like most cities there is panhandling on major streets which I will never understand why that is allowed. I had someone pull a knife on my half a mile from the mall driving in to my office around a year or 2 ago in traffic. NOBODY pays attention when driving, there are homeless/junkies all over the place during the day. A buddy was doing some masonry work for the city nearby Warren Ave. They had to spend the first 30 minutes or so walking through the jobsite every morning to clear out needles or feces. Brockton High is incredibly unsafe.

Shame isn't it? DW was an absolute jewel before 1990. The first time I ever ran for distance was in DW, around the resevoirs. It was awesome because they only allow motor vehicles in one lane.
I remember chics rollerskating in the summer, kids and families on bikes or walking. Then you had to feed the ducks near the waterfall.
And the park was open all night, gates never locked.
Apparently some of the trails were frequented by gay men playing hide the pickle in the woods and after a couple of murders, they started to lock the gates at night.

I haven't been through the park in at least 25 years.

The biggest problem is the 60 years of absentee fathers in the specific community. That S-word ain't flying in the 40's or 50's. By 1960, hit-it-and-quit-it was 100% AOK. Ergo, we're on the third or 4th generation RAISED by single-female-parent households. These people don't need money or education. They need consequences at home. A good slap upside hte head. You'd be shocked how fast behavior would change.
