Looking for 1911 suggestions

In a free state this would be my reply as well; tough to find in MA and, if you do find one, you will pay a little premium. I recently got lucky and found one...GREAT shooter.
Why? Is it on a ban list, and if so, why is it any different than any other 1911 on the market?

Cabela's in Scarborough has a drawer full.

It's not that they are any different, I just don't think Springfield bothers with the BS of the approval process in this state...we are fairly limited in the 1911 dept down here. I pay the vig when I see something worthwhile.

Another vote for the SR1911. I bought the full size this past fall and have shot around 1500 rounds to date with no issues. I think its well made for the $.

Just picked up a sig 1911 target last week. I wanted the TTT but couldn't find one. I love the thing so much I've already been to the range twice this week.

I have a Springfield that I sent out to get all fixed up, I paid $300 at a gun show for it and it was misused, taken apart and put back together incorrectly, but now its NICE!!!
I picked up a Remington R1 Enhanced, love it also. It has slightly more recoil than my Springfield (not broken in yet?) but they are both great firearms.
Pullman Arms has a decked out 1911 with ported slide and all the cool doo-dads and such, something to drool over and shoot alot at the range. Practical probably not but I bet its sweet to shoot. My wife will kill me if I get another 1911 this quickly.

I had a Para 1911 great fit, match barrel all the cool stuff 14rd capacity. Shot very accurate when it chambered a round. Para said they have a high round count break in, I chock it up as a gun that will get you killed in a self defense situation. Sold it in AL for $1100, exactly what I paid for it.

I highly reccomend the R1, crisp trigger pull with great reset, same with the Springfield Armory. I have shot SIG, S&W, and Colt 1911's they are all on par, Sigs come in pretty colors and as stated above may not be an exact 1911. The Colt was nice. I prefer a reverse beaver tail, full length guide rod, and I buy wilson combat mags.

Since I was 12 years ago, my absolute dream gun has got to be a nice stainless steel 1911 with ivory grips. I seriously hope to own one someday.

You gotta ask your self do you want a true 1911 or one that looks like one lol . Guns like the sig ot s&w have parts that aren't true 1911 style . Some sigs don't fit in normal holster .

I got a r1 live the thing to death . Every one i personally know bought the ruger. There front sight has fallen off or there stainless gun started to rust.

I personally think the r1 or the Spartan has the best track record in this price point.
Also if you know a friendly deal Remington has
No rust or lost sight on mine.

Buy a Ruger 1911 and then buy some grips. Total cost will be around $700-$750 depending on the grips. Buying a "dealer exclusive" with ivory grips will be much more. Plus, it won't be real ivory anyway. Just some sort of white plastic stuff. Remington makes an R1 Enhanced "Pearl Edition" that will come close.

If you like REALLy shiney Taurus makes one.

Do you have a specific model number for the ruger? I like the second one, minus all that tacky gold stuff. :)

The Full Size SR1911 is model # 6700. The CMD is model # 6702. I see 2 available in the classifieds right now. I just picked one up off the NES classifieds, it's incredible for the price.

Thanks! Have you shot it yet? Are the rugers actual 1911s, or jus guns that look like 1911s?

I had a sr1911 but sold it. ended up buying another sr1911.

I too am looking for my first 1911, which will be used primarily for big bore plinking. And while I do want for an authentic Colt M1911 at some point, any 1911 will do for now. As long as it's accurate and functions smoothly, I'd be happy. Is there much of a ballistic performance difference (.45 ACP point-blank range) between the various barrel lengths?

ETA: I found this trajectory table:

If accurate, these things reach out better than I'd thought.

S&W makes a great 1911 and with their lifetime warranty you can't go wrong. Para on the other hand, just isn't worth the trouble. After going through two of their compact 45acp Warthog's I bought a S&W.

To be absolutely honest, most "mid tier" production 1911s are essentially the same in quality and performance, and EVERYONE makes one. The differences between a Colt, Springfield, Smith & Wesson, Sig, Ruger, etc, etc really has to do with features. So what features do you want:

What finish do you want? Blue, stainless, or do you want one of the technical finishes that companies offer (usually at a premium)?

Do you want a lightweight material?

Do you want adjustable target sights, or combat sights, night sights, fiber optics, or traditional sights?

Do you want an ambi safety? Beavertail grip safety? Extended thumb safety, mag release or slide stop? Extended mag well? Solid guide rod? Do you want an accessory rail?

Once you narrow these down, you'll be in a better position to decide what gun you want. All those companies (and others) make a fine 1911, it's just a matter of picking the best one for you.

Also, if you're really looking for value, there are also boutique manufacturers and gunsmiths who will make you a custom 1911 to your exact specification, and you can get features that you can't get on a production gun, like a handfitted slide and frame, and a custom fit match barrel. If accuracy is your aim, these features are totally worth it, and might be within your budget, or close to it.

The SR1911 looks great, but do you know if there is anyone that does a really shiny finish? The SR1911 has a more matte finish.

"Really shiny finish" sounds like more of a subjective judgement - I think you need to go to the store, look at some guns in person and decide for yourself. You may be mistaking a stainless finish for nickle plated (i.e. "pimp gun"). If you're looking for nickle plating, you can have any gun you want refinished by a qualified gunsmith.

I don't know who to buy, but I do know who not to buy from, Taurus. I've never dealt with such a POS firearm and POS company in my entire life. For one, brand new out of the box after the first 20 shots, the slide to frame fit got really sloppy and I couldn't hit anything with it. Thinking it was me, I put it in a rest and shot it at a target 15 yards away, lets just say that 3 shots didn't even land on paper. Not to mention the barrel to bushing to slide fit was loose as a goose. Sent it back, 3 weeks later got it back with a letter claiming from Taurus "that's how it shoots" to which I noticed it had a new slide on it and was less slop, but after a few boxes, there were metal shavings coming off and the entire surface of the frame had huge gouges in it from the slide grinding away at it. Sent it back to them for repair, 4 weeks later got it back and it went right to consignment. Never owned such a garbage gun in my entire life.

If you want shiny it's easy but time consuming to do it yourself. I would suggest not doing the entire gun or even the entire slide. It's looks nice when you have it wiped down for pictures but as soon as you touch it or oil it there are marks all over it. On a 1911 I suggest just doing polished accents. Here's a picture of my friends 1911 that I worked on. The entire slide would have been obnoxious so I did the front of front serrations and back or the rear serrations as well as the top of the serrations themselves. I left the lower part of the serrations matte for a nice contrast. Both he and I think it looks great. Others might hate it. We all like what we like.

I bought the Ruger SR1911 and it's definitely money well spent. Along with the fact that it's a high quality gun for the price, Ruger is second to none when it comes to support. After asking if you've tried various ammo they send you an overnight label and you get it back in a week or so. No questions asked (other than ammo).

You're not the first person I've heard say this - in fact, this has been the opinion of virtually every Taurus owner I've met.

My only experience with Taurus has been with a revolver, but the experience was the same - they're cheaply made S&W clones, and even as a relatively inexperienced shooter, I could tell it was crap.

I would not include Taurus in my list of "mid tier" 1911s.
