I am a new member here and have recently bought my first firearm. I have experience shooting guns with friends and family but I want to be able to head to a range to shoot. My question is: where can I go in Massachusetts to shoot (at a range) without being an officiall member. I am interested in joining one but I want to go Thursday and just fire some rounds. Thanks in advance.

I have one in my kitchen, it’s electric if that matters. If you’re close by send me a pm and I’ll take you as my guest

You can come and shoot with us. $25 for a day of shooting...free hearing and eye protection...targets start at .20 cents...
I heard about a place in Holliston, must have been this. I will check it out at some point. It’s just a good 45 minutes from me in Plymouth.

What are the hours for the range? I looked at the website and it said 10 but wasn’t sure if that was Specifically for the range.

Your best bet by far is to join a good gun club. Most ranges are $25 an hour. Most gun clubs are $150 to $200 a year. Find one close to you with an indoor range that's open 24 hours and you'll be all set. The club I'm at is 24 hour indoor range up to 44 Magnum.....I go frequently at night after dinner.

This. $150 per year works out to 41 cents per day. It’s short money. If you can afford a gun you can afford joining a club IMO.

I would like to join a club and plan on it but this week I just want to get out there and the clubs close to my house you need to be sponsored to get in. Not knowing any members off the top of my head is a problem.

Is someone goes to a club near me and they want to sponsor me then great I have the money.

You should look at Mass Firearms and join as a member because you can get in right away. Don't feel like cleaning your gear? Just rent some stuff, range ammo prices are competitive. I would like some place closer to home but right now I still can't decide which one to join. Also rules vary between places, and there are few things that tip in Mass Firearms favor.

OCSA in west Pembroke (off of Rt. 53, near the Duxbury line) has 5 station trap and skeet, 200 yard heated rifle house plus more 100 yard rifle stations, separate 50 yard pistol range, IDPA pits, a very active black powder community, and a food service open on weekends. Currently lacking an indoor range, there's an active group working on rebuilding the range. There's also a very active CMP / Service Rifle group.
Marshfield is right off of Exit 12 on Rt. 3, has a good indoor range (24/7 22lr, centerfire 08:00 I think to 20:00??,) outdoor rifle/pistol, trap and skeet, excellent archery ranges, and a stocked pond.
Both require sponsors, and both are active clubs with over 1000 members.

American Firearms School (AFS) in No. Attleboro is another option. It is a rental range open to the public.

I believe Marshfield and Pembroke have ranges? I don't know much about them but a buddy of mine lives in Pembroke and he belonged to the Marshfield Club (not anymore). They had an indoor range if I remember correctly. I do not know if they let non-members shoot there who isn't a guest of a member.

I think there’s a outside range that the state owns near Georgetown. In the north shore area.
That's Martin burns. Not reliable. Stories are prevalent of folks going through the steps of getting written permission to use it only to drive there during "open hours" and find it's closed.

My friend belongs to the Pembroke club and he is going to sponsor me but they don’t take people until the first of the year. Sucks but it will be worth it once I am in.

Not the case - There are new members voted every month and safety orientations every month.
Safety orientation is always the sunday morning before the monday general members meeting (first Monday of the month...)
Given the Easter holiday, the orientation and members meetings are delayed one week:

ocsa

Next Range Orientation: SUN Apr. 8th 2018, 8:30 AM
Next Monthly Meeting: MON Apr. 9th 2018 7:00 PM

I belong to Mass Firearm School. I like it except for not allowing rifle calibers. But hey, not a deal breaker.

What I personally like is that there are no FUDD rules as far as I've seen or heard. So you can load up your mags, rapid fire, draw etc. I know Plymouth you have all sorts of rules (know several members and shot there a few times).

The down side is its a public range. So occasionally you get young people there shooting 12ga buck shot in the next booth shooting a zombie target at 7 yards and then high-fiving after they wing it. But lately they have had a RO walking around trying to keep it safe.

I apolagize I didn’t mean to say Pembroke, my friend belongs to the club in the plymton carver area. That would be great if it was every month.

I’m not sure what exactly a sponsorship intails but if anyone would sponsor me into a club locally to me, I would greatly appreciate it!
