I love my M&P 9 full size but every time I look at the magazine I get angry. That stupid chunk of plastic taking up space at the bottom of the mag is such a waste. I know it's so common to complain about the stupid laws but I think I want to sell it and get something that takes pre-ban mags. I love the feel of the gun, the accuracy of the gun, and the look, but the damn capacity sucks at the range.
I carry a 3913TSW as an EDC so I'm thinking a 5906 as a nice range toy with some pre-ban 15's. I was also thinking maybe a Sig P226....
I am partial to the the 3rd gen S&W's....
Thoughts?

I hate the fact that you need to buy a 100 dollar parts kit just to make the trigger usable, I can't justify buying one as long as that is true

The 5906 is a great pistol, and there are literally millions of prebans out there (the 5906 will work with any and all mags for the 59 series - from the first gen. 59 introduced the late 1970's to the last 3rd gen, the 5906TSW).

Panic buying has of couse caused the price of all magazines to skyrocket, but the prices seem to be leveling off a little. Hopefully in another month or so they will come back down to more sane prices. (the last 59 series pre-bans I bought - pre-panic - I paid less than $20 each).

The 5906 is a heavy pistol, but with a good belt and holster they are really not all that difficult to carry concealed. The weight of it though has to make it the sweetest and easiest shooting 9mm out there. If you do think the weight is too much for a carry piece, there is also the 5903, which is identical to the 5906, but used an alluminum alloy frame, making it quite a bit lighter. They are a bit harder to find, but they are out there.

I, too, am very fond of the 3rd gen. S&W auto pistols, and I think you certainly couldn't go wrong if you chose one.

Great pics and advice.
The trigger job really does make the M&P not so much of a deal.
I have my 3913 as a carry piece so the weight of the 5906 as a range gun doesn't really bother me. Plus I'm a vintage fanatic, especially in solid SS.

I believe that the 5906 is one of the most under rated pistols on the market. I have a SIG 226 9mm stainless that I shoot in USPSA competition and the 5906 compares favorably with it. Out of the box (the SIG has an expensive trigger job) the 5906 is a better gun despite the higher cost of the SIG. The only reason I use the SIG vs the S&W is weight. The heavier weight of the SIG does a better job of controlling recoil and muzzle flip.

I want to buy one but I am hesitating for this very reason. The reality is that we are heavily governed here. But, like you, I don't know that I want to be reminded of the over-regulation/limitations of my rights while I am doing one of the only things that I still find empowering. Ugh.

I want a polymer gun, and the M&P's fit my weird hands best.

This is not the best time to be buying normal cap mags in anything. [laugh] You might find your upgrade to land you in pretty much the same spot, unless you're willing to overpay for stuff.

I know how you feel though, I don't like owning handguns where I have to use magazines with "poop blocks" on the bottom of them. Blech.

The trigger job you can do yourself. It's easy. Yes, you shouldn't have to, but to have a great weapon I lived with it. Other than the trigger and the BS low cap mags, my M&P40 is outstanding in every way.

You can always try to buy pre-ban Walther 16-round mags. Do NOT compete with me though, I try to find them and gobble them up before anyone else noticing them.

There are also online links detailing how to convert pre-ban Beretta 92FS mags. You just have to do a good job and test their reliability.

The trigger feels great after bringing my 9mm to Lou at Business End Customs. great work, awesome guy and extremely affordable. Only problem now is seeing examples in his shop of M&Ps with new sights, custom grip treatments, coatings, grip length reduction, etc...you could dump a lot of money into mods

Another M&P 9mm helpful hint came from a friend who showed me how to modify the 10 round magazines with a dremel so they actually hold 10 rounds instead of 9 and a half rounds. It involves trimming the bottom edges of the follower and removing one coil length from the bottom of the spring.

Now mine goes to 11.

Considering you can buy an M&P for under $500, paying an extra $100 for a trigger job doesn't seem like a big deal to me

Price is such an arbitrary thing to bitch about- if the gun was sold for $650 with a perfect trigger, no one would have a problem, but $500 + a $100 trigger job and people bitch.

I'm also amazed people would sell a gun because of the aesthetics of a magazine. We're in MA, we're limited to 10 rounds- either break the law, or get over it. At least Smith makes a MA model (I'm looking at YOU, Springfield).

Well, no. The argument is that if you buy something like a glock you'll have access to a large amount of legal preban magazines that hold over 10 rounds. With the M&P, you'll never to be able to use standard capacity magazines legally in MA. (Until the supreme court strikes down mag limits that is [smile])

Only had a few issue with failure to feed with mine, but it was with the cheapest crap no name branded ammo. ran through remington, winchester, federal, magtech with no issues. great ergonomics, value, performance and made in the usa!

I second BEC, Lou did a trigger job and added Trijicon night sight to my M&P 45c...now grouping at 3" at 10 yards and I can see the sights!

He also showed me a custom 1911 commander that was absolutely beautiful...will be having him make me one after I hit the lottery[grin]

What would the penalty be if you got caught with a non-compliant magazine in Massachusetts?

I can't cite the MGL, but it's a felony violation of the states AWB and would undoubtedly make you a federally prohibited person for life, on top of whatever fines and/or jail time the judge wanted to throw at you (not to mention legal fees).

Lets get enough of us involed to vote in the right people to change these ass backwords Mass laws...

Come on, stand up and fight!!!

.

OH Wait, I just remembered we live in MASS and need to do what the Kennedys tell us to do......................

.

Yes I wish the laws would change, but I don't see that happening anytime soon...

Here's your answer:

General Laws: CHAPTER 140, Section 131M

Section 131M. No person shall sell, offer for sale, transfer or possess an assault weapon or a large capacity feeding device that was not otherwise lawfully possessed on September 13, 1994. Whoever not being licensed under the provisions of section 122 violates the provisions of this section shall be punished, for a first offense, by a fine of not less than $1,000 nor more than $10,000 or by imprisonment for not less than one year nor more than ten years, or by both such fine and imprisonment, and for a second offense, by a fine of not less than $5,000 nor more than $15,000 or by imprisonment for not less than five years nor more than 15 years, or by both such fine and imprisonment.

The provisions of this section shall not apply to: (i) the possession by a law enforcement officer for purposes of law enforcement; or (ii) the possession by an individual who is retired from service with a law enforcement agency and is not otherwise prohibited from receiving such a weapon or feeding device from such agency upon retirement.
