Love & Hate M&P 9

Another M&P 9mm helpful hint came from a friend who showed me how to modify the 10 round magazines with a dremel so they actually hold 10 rounds instead of 9 and a half rounds. It involves trimming the bottom edges of the follower and removing one coil length from the bottom of the spring.

Now mine goes to 11.

Can you elaborate further, or point to more details online? The 9.5 round capacity is killing me, esp. on the M&P .45.

I love my M&P 9 full size but every time I look at the magazine I get angry. That stupid chunk of plastic taking up space at the bottom of the mag is such a waste. I know it's so common to complain about the stupid laws but I think I want to sell it and get something that takes pre-ban mags. I love the feel of the gun, the accuracy of the gun, and the look, but the damn capacity sucks at the range.
I carry a 3913TSW as an EDC so I'm thinking a 5906 as a nice range toy with some pre-ban 15's. I was also thinking maybe a Sig P226....
I am partial to the the 3rd gen S&W's....
Thoughts?

If you're partial to 3rd Gen S&Ws, like the light weight of the 3913, but want higher capacity, don't forget to think about the 6906.

Its similarly sized to the 3913, with an alloy frame like the 3913, but has a double stack mag. I believe it carries 12 rounds in the stock mag.
Back in the 80s, Ram Line made some EXCELLENT mags with their patented spring that held 15 rounds. Ramline mags worked flawlessly in my 6906. I'd bet you cold find a couple of those old Ram Lines if you looked on GB.

I got rid of it because I never carried it. But it was a great gun.

Thanks for the advice. I have been contemplating a 6906 as well. I will keep my eyes open!

My first carry gun was the 6906. It was a great shooting gun. I didn not like carrying it. The twin safeties dug into my side and it was just bigger and heavier than I was willing to carry. These days, I still wouldn't carry it. But I'm a wuss when it comes to weight. But its a nice gun.

If you are in a bad M&P relationship, let me help. I am a certified M&P marriage councilor. (insert smiley)

+1 to this. I bought an M&P from a member on here that had a Business End trigger job. It failed after a few hundred rounds. When I pulled the M&P9 apart to replace the pieces with a DCAEK, there were definitely some non-standard, non-DCAEK parts in the gun. Not sure what he put in it...

As to the magazines, go slowly and trim the LOOOOONG legs of the follower down slowly. I marked it off with a pencil, dremeled the plastic down, and then finished with a file. Absolutely test them for function afterwards, and do this at your own risk, especially if this is going to be a carry piece for you. If you do it right, you can get 10 rds in, and seat the magazine on a closed slide without having to hammer it in.

Good luck!

I hate the fact that you need to buy a 100 dollar parts kit just to make the trigger usable, I can't justify buying one as long as that is true

The MA trigger can be improved by changing the trigger return spring to a "free state" version for $2.75.

I bought one of these Ram Line mags for my 6906 and found it to be extremely unreliable and very susceptible to dirt. IMHO a real POS. Stick with the stock S&W mags.

Twin safeties digging into your side? There is a slide mounted safety and a slide stop on the left side, but neither protrude far enough to cause any discomfort (for me, anyway). The 6906 is pretty small for a 9mm and the "excess weight" is the extra ammo vs a single stack gun. The extra weight and the fat butt is what you pay for 13 rounds of 9mm.

My 6906 is a great shooter; factory trigger is pretty good (fantastic when compared to the competition back when this pistol made its debut) Novak sights, and excellent accuracy for a stock gun. Many years ago at an IPSC match at Bass River I took three shots at an "option target" off hand at 100 yds. I managed to put two out of three rounds on paper. The hits sucked, but I was absolutely delighted with the results.

PS To those 6906 owners out there. These pistols come with fine lines cut vertically on the front strap. Take a 30 LPI checlering file and cut across these lines and you will be rewarded with some very nice checkering. This thought came to me while I was admiring my old (40,000 rounds or so) 6906.

Thats interesting because mine ran very well. I guess this exposes the real point. You need to test the gun you are going to depend on with the mags and ammo that you intend to use.
