So I have my pre-ban Armscorp M14 and the bedding in the stock is cracked. Now I am sure that it will shoot just fine the way it is, but I am not one to leave stuff the way they are. I am toying with the idea, OK just waiting for my tax return, of going the EBR Mk 14 mod 0 route with it. I know the stocks are expensive, but I want one.

For those of you who know glass and the 308 better then I do, what would you recommend I look at for a scope to mount on it? I think the Army mounts a fixed 10x, I am not sure I want a fixed power scope.

I am looking at upgrading to an 18.5 inch FA NM "bush barrel" with a Vortex FS.

What do you think?
Thanks
Ed

How much do you want to spend? What distance do you plan on shooting? Larue makes good mounts. I would personally look at a Schmidt & Bender short dot. 1.1-4 is a nice range for a battle rifle. 4x Should easily work at 500 yards.

Well, I realize there are better rifles for LONG range shooting, but I would like something to reach out a bit further then I could, not can [wink], with my AR. I keep reading about this 1000 yd range going up in western MA and it has me really wanting to learn how to shoot much farther. Cost, well I am heading out to sea here next month, so money may not be as much an issue. I think if I could stay at or around 1k I could be comfortable, obviously less is better ammo is expensive and I am going to want to shoot the hell out of this thing [smile].

Thank you for your reply.

If you are wanting to shoot at 1000yds, I wouldn't cut the barrel length down to 18.5".

If you are serious about learning to shoot at long range, get your rifle re-bedded in a standard stock and take it to any Highpower beginners match. Let it be known you are willing to take instruction.Once you start ringing up 10's and X's at 600 yds with iron sights, you won't want to put glass on that rifle.

That is something I want to do, and I do have a Service Rifle AR project going as well. This particular rifle is old, and in need of some work. I originally bought the rifle with the intention of building it up this way and would be more of a fun rifle to play with while I practice with cheaper 556 ammo.

Why? I don't have any tubes less than 26" now but I rang a lot of steel with a 18".

Well, I was thinking about sight radius and velocity loss. Yes, you can hit targets at long range with short barrels, but I don't know of anybody who would intentionally shorten a barrel knowing they wanted to shoot long range.

Good. You will enjoy shooting Service Rifle.
