MA Residents: News from SIG on new models UPDATE PG 3

GOOD NEWS

The official word is that the last phase for approval is underway for some of their 1911 variants. These should be available to us in the first quarter of 2009.

[smile]

I really hope this isn't another M&P45 debacle.

The submitted SIG 1911's have the "same" safety features as the S&W 1911's and the rest of the approved 1911's. The M&P45 confusion was a bit different.

The SIG 1911s use the same safety system as the ParaOrdnance models. ParaOrdnance and SIG 1911s use the same firing pin safety system as the Series 80 Colts -- pulling the trigger pushes up a lever on the frame, that lever depresses a plunger on the bottom of the slide.

In contrast, the S&W 1911 firing pin safety is not connected to the trigger -- it is deactivated by depressing the grip safety.

Correct... the point was it's still a firing pin safety, which is, how I understand it, a needed (one of) feature to be MA compliant.

My understanding is that it needs to pass a drop test, and the firing pin safety is one of the ways to achieve that. I don't think the firing pin safety buys you anything from the AG's point of view with respect to "child-proofing" the gun.

Springfield Armory sells 1911s in CA without a firing pin safety and they pass the drop test. The use a heavy-duty firing pin retaining spring and a lightweight, titanium firing pin.

There is zero (logical) reason why Sig's 1911s won't be EOPS/AG compliant; that being said, we're talking about the AG here- and "logic" is rarely encountered when dealing with the AG's office. [rolleyes]

I'm really looking forward to it... it'll be interesting to see what exact model/models will be on the list

Agreed, though from what I've been told, this appears to be a lock.
