MA: SEVEN ROUND MAG BAN! This is not a joke.

I'm getting the same kind of crap. Canned replies. This one came today, with a little more than just 'we got your email'..

Dear Richard:
On behalf of Governor Deval L. Patrick, thank you for your recent correspondence regarding firearm safety and legislation.

Governor Patrick believes that successfully deterring gun violence requires a multi-faceted approach and should include policies focused on guns and at-risk individuals. That is why the Governor has and will continue to push for legislation that includes a formal collaboration between Massachusetts and the
National Mental Health Registry, a ban on assault weapons and a limit on the amount of guns one person can buy in a given month.

Once again, thank you for your input on this important issue. Please feel free to contact our office again in the future with any additional questions or concerns. Your comments are always welcome in this administration.

Sincerely,
Governor Patrick's Constituent Services Office

I emailed them back a short letter with my concerns, and quickly got a canned notice of receipt.

Just getting my fax set up this week and will start sending faxes, so at least they will see some hard-copy, instead of letting mail robot programs handle their replies.

When I Googled National Mental Health Registry, I found one in Malaysia.
It seems like it might be a good idea, but I've yet to find one in America.

Ive already written my reps and the president/vice pres. twice. They have sent me email back stating that they understand we are concerned and will continue to try and push through stricter gun control laws. WTF! Has anyone else experienced this? They obviously did not read my mail or they just dont care. Either way it is not right! They are not representing us and we need to change this! Stay on top of your reps and CALL THEM.

Wait, who is writing you back saying they support stricter gun control, your state reps/senators??? If that is the case than we need to know who they are, what they said and put them in the spread sheet so we can all hammer them with calls & letters.

I got the same thing in response to a whole lot of obscenities sent his way.

Fax - that is a good idea. If I find one, I may be tempted to start faxing again.

I'm trying out the TRENDnet 56K USB 2.0 Phone, Internet, and Fax Modem TFM-561U
Found it on Amazon and it has good reviews. It plugs into a USB port and your phone line.
Might get it installed tomorrow morning and start making some fax letters to send.

If things ever turn real bad and the US gov turns off the internet, phones will still be on.
And people will communicate using phone MODEM bulletin boards and/or faxes.
Just like the old days..

First of all...what? Second, if the government "turned off the internet" your modem wouldn't work for web browsing or bulletin boards.

I applaud your effort to fax our reps though.

So, I decided to take a look at our state constitution. First, when it comes to firearms, I think we are screwed-it would have to be argued in point, but, well, thats not what I found. What I DID find were these 2 articles:

Article XXIII. No subsidy, charge, tax, impost, or duties, ought to be established, fixed, laid, or levied, under any pretext whatsoever, without the consent of the people or their representatives in the legislature.
What this COULD be interpreted as, and, again, its for a lawyer type, not necessarily me, is that, this proposed insurance thing, actually, cannot happen-as it doesnt apply to everyone. The consent would have to be for all. As we could view an insurance-something made up, as it doesnt exist at this time-as a tax. It would be a HARD sell, but its possible.
Then, there is this one:
Article XXIV. Laws made to punish for actions done before the existence of such laws, and which have not been declared crimes by preceding laws, are unjust, oppressive, and inconsistent with the fundamental principles of a free government.
Now, this one is interesting. Reading this, it looks like, we cannot be punished for something that was perfectly legal one day, then illegal the next. In other words, a 7 round mag ban-or ANY limit, I would imagine-would be enforecable-because, it was once deemed legal to own. Then, suddenly, it wasnt. This may actually render our current assault gun law ban null & void. But, again, I'm not a lawyer-just a concerned citizen. Its kind of interesting, reading our state constitution....

Mine does. I'm using FIOS. But, if the goverment orders the web shut down, they would most likely leave the phone service turned on.
Since without the WWW, phone service would be critical. Maybe they would leave cable TV turned on too.

Or, they might just go after the social networking sites. Like they did in Iran, when they had their 'almost' revolution..

If we will go back to the original Q:

Our lovely Patrick always suggesting to fix state proplems by raising taxes.
If anybody has heard any diff solution from him please let me know.

Cutting spending is one idea they've never heard of..[smile]

Maybe we should remind the gov that if he shuts down firearm & ammo sales in MA, that's going to cut into his sales tax profits.
And, if 100,000 taxpayers, homeowners & business owners, suddenly feel it's necessary to leave MA, to avoid becoming a felon,
that could hurt state income taxes & sales taxes.

Plus, onerous gun laws will make MA a less safe place to live, since it will become more like Chicago. (the world leader in onerous gun laws).
That will make companies want to leave the state and make it harder to attract new companies to the state.

Military veterans (like myself) will not want to live here, plus people from the more firearm friendly states, will avoid coming here.
Once Boston has that Chicago reputation, the tourist trade will dry up, along with trade shows and conventions.

MA will become like creepy NYC where PC anti-gun laws rule.
Hunters or target shooters going to NH or Maine will avoid crossing over MA state lines.

Maybe when we write to the Governor, we should all tell him that we will move out of the state,
rather than suffer the loss of our rights under 2A.

Sorry I was about to walk out the door and posted that quickly, the email I was refering to was the same one posted above from Deval's office, but its still a slap in the face to get mail back saying they are going to try and do exactly what I told them I dont want, clearly they do not care what our emails say.

Same exact reply I got

I asked for an explanation or web site which explains the 7 round thing and same canned reply. Wrote back asking again got nothing. Wrote my state senator and rep and got no response. Seems like a bad idea just ignoring folks. They don't have to agree but they should at least explain themselves or have a web site or documents which do.

Call them. Relentlessly. Tell their aides that you expect a call back. If they don't call you back, call again. Better yet, get your buddies and family to call as well. This is the only way you will get your point across to these morons, believe me. At that point follow it up with a written letter or fax, saying "It was nice speaking with you today, and to reiterate where I stand....blah blah blah". Screw the emails. Remember, they work for YOU.

I've been looking up some fax numbers.. Not sure if they are all correct, but I did my best.

President Barack Obama (D), (202) 456-2461
Vice President Joseph Biden (D), 202-456-2461
Rep. Edward Markey (D-MA), 202-226-0092
Rep. Niki Tsongas (D-MA), 202-226-0771
Gov. Deval Patrick (D-MA), 617-727-9725
Sen. Brian Joyce (D-MA), 617-722-1004
Sen. Kenneth Donnelly (D-MA), 617-722-1004
Rep. Jay Kaufman (D-MA), 781-862-6181
Atty. General Martha Coakley (D-MA). 413-784-1244

Before there was any internet, there were phone modem bulletin boards and message drops / email.
Bulletin board system - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia
They were slow, text-only systems, but they worked just fine.

Just dust off the old hardware and it could be back running within hours.

I can remember having a whole list of phone numbers for local bulletin boards. All done over POTS lines. Old school, but it worked, and not just for text. Besides walking ten miles back and forth to school in a blizzard we used to actually have to unzip and decode our porn.

Memories....[laugh]

Anyone have any updates on this shitpile? I'm guessing it's still stalled at this point.

-Mike

The committee members have been named. I didn't see anything on the schedule regarding Deval or Linsky's bills.

Last I heard, they still hadn't decided whether to send it to the Judiciary or Public Safety committee.

I spoke to someone in the GOAL office yesterday. They told me the Linsky and Patrick bills would most likely be assigned bill numbers in Mid March. Keep your eyes peeled!
