I recently bought a Norinco MAK 90 Sporter, the first two numbers of the serial number are "94", no flash hider, no bayonet lug and it has the thumbhole stock.

Please correct me if I am wrong here, I am under the impression that it is a post 1989 ban gun but a pre 94 Clinton Ban gun. The reason I suspect it is a Pre 94 Ban gun is that I read several times that the last MAK 90's were imported in May of 1994, I know the first 2 numbers of the serial # are the import date so am I correct it made its way into the country before September 1994?

I am thinking that even if it can be confirmed that it is a PRE Sept 1994 gun it was designed to comply with the 922r, I want to put a collapsible stock on this but I fear it will then be a non compliant 922r gun. Im under the assumption that if I tamper with the thumbhole stock I would need to put 5 or 6 "USA made parts" to cover the 922r laws.

I am hoping someone can answer these questions for me.

Thank You in advance

I have a Mak 90 that didn't come with a thumbhole stock but I'm not sure, I think you're right about the 922r compliance and needing to add some US parts (how many, I don't know off the top of my head). Hopefully warwickben, Sir_Macadoo, or Queen Bee will be here soon to chime in.

A perfect example of how stupid gun laws have become.

An ordinary law abiding citizen, is a few "made in USA" parts away from being a criminal for altering the stock of his rifle.

Unreal. /rantover

Don't gay up a mak 90 with a collapsible stock.... but yes you need to ass us parts to be 922r compliant. Usually people do a tapco trigger group, but Chinese AK's have some of the best triggers around.

I'd recommend the Tapco g2 trigger group, Tapco slant muzzle brake, and a hogue pistol grip. (Or any other American made replacement parts if you don't already have them.) If you're gonna alter the stock situation you can buy synth poly stocks from K-VAR that are made in the USA. Idk what stock pieces count toward 922r though.

Yes, you are correct. All chinese imports of firearms were stopped before the 94 AWB.

People usually for US parts change

Butstock 1us part
Handgrip 1us part
Handguard set 1us part
Trigger group counts two pieces
Muzzle brake for 1us part
You can hammer out the op rod and put in a new american made one but id say nah.
The grey area is if you replace your magazine follower, spring and floorplate for the gun to count as us parts. Then sticking a mag that isnt done up that way leads you into trouble

I think its 5 needed for a Norinco MAK90 with a turned down muzzle

And six for NHM90 with a threaded muzzle

Thank You all for your input, I contacted a gunsmith that I know and he is going to assist me in getting this gun 922r compliant so I can do what I want with this gun, My only hesitation is the trigger group as I read that the MAK 90 trigger is really nice. Another thing Im hesitant is my Gunsmith will have to tack weld the flash hider on this as he doesnt have access to a lathe machine, Im not 100% on what my decision is going to be on that.

Any one got case studies of 922r assembly busts? I've never heard of one. I even see stuff on armslist where they say "this gun is not 922r compliant". The gun can't be seized "just to check" and if it's seized for something else you got bigger problems anyway I'd think. Not like the parts are marked...

^ This.

Be compliant all you want but 922r has got to be the least enforced law regarding firearms on the fed level. No one really gives a shit. It was more a law written to regulate what importers can bring in.

You own the gun legally. You are not a gang member or drug dealer. You decide to put a nice stock set on your rifle and leave the rest of the parts original... I wouldn't lose any sleep about it. Remember its a fed law, not a state law.

I seriously am considering this as well, I am never going to commit a crime with or without this gun however on the off chance that if it was ever needed in a self defense of a home invasion or something insane ( this gun would not be my first option ) I would not want any hassles whatsoever, obviously I am just thinking way outside the box, and am well aware that gun owners are more than likely guilty before proven innocent in such a scenario especially in Massachusetts. Maybe I am just being too paranoid but I like to think of every worst case scenario especially with this type of thing. Again I apreaciate the input from all.
