Massachusetts Rifle Association - Woburn, MA

A premature welcome!

Thank you! Hope to meet some NESers when I go

Peterpressure, Let me know what you think of the club. I'm looking for a place or 2

I will let you know how it goes, but I have heard good things about the MRA.

Here is one happy new MRA member!

I have been a member since January of this year and I have nothing but good things to say about the club.

Joined last Wed. Gotta go take a quick test today, then I get my membership card!!

I guess I cannot use the outdoor ranges until 6 months? or a current member vouches for my skillz? whatever, no AR yet...

I'm pretty sure you just need to qualify on the indoor range before they let you outside. IIRC, qualification consists of getting all shots on a certain size target in the Loeb range. It shouldn't be too tough with a decent rifle.

Anyway, welcome to MRA. It's a good place shoot.[smile]

you need to get all shots on paper in Loeb and then they take you outside and make sure you're getting all shots on paper there.

It's pretty important considering that downrange from the outdoor ranges is the junction of I93 and I95.

Pete you will not be able to use the 100/200 and the McGlauglin Range (50yd).
You will have access to the outside Pope Range once you complete the Range Safety Course. Thats they way it was for me atleast. You can qualify on Sundays for the outside ranges by making a appointment at the office.

joined back in March. great place to shoot. i have NOT been there on the weekends (yet). but will hopefully meet some new folks.

i'm already recognizing faces during the week.

As soon as my year is up @ Woburn Sportsmen, I'm joining MRA...their facilities are top-notch, and people seem a lot friendlier.

Depends what you're after. At least when I've been there, Woburn has a much more active High Power range which doesn't make you shoot through the pipes of doom, and I've met a bunch of really excellent and helpful people there in the afternoons after the matches. (Including the guy who pointed me here!) They've also got fantastic archery facilities, the black powder range, and a couple of trap fields that don't require steel shot.

On the other hand, MRA has much better indoor facilities with 24/7 access, sporting clays, and once you're qualified for the outdoor ranges you don't need a range officer there like you have for High Power at Woburn for the last year.

You may as well join MRA now if you have the cash; starting in April they run a special where for only (I think) $40 extra you get the remainder of this year and all of next year.

I actually think the clubs complement each other pretty well, which is probably why I'm a member of both. (But I may ditch Woburn after this year's price hike. I'm actually a member of three different clubs, and it adds up!)

I was there yesterday and didn't see anything about that. When will it be closing? I know several of the tracks weren't running so perhaps it's down for repairs until the work day?

The work day was a couple of weeks ago. There was some mention that there was more work to do with the ventilation system, and that that range could be closed for a couple of more days. Not sure when this is being scheduled.

i went early today also. it was open. i was nervious when i saw a dump truck and cherry picker on the side of the building...

but I shot (woooohooooo).

i didn't see any signs up in the lobby either. i check the MRA Forums as well and didn't see anything either.

anyone know how long it's going to take?

Just an FYI - I saw this posted at the Massrifleforums website:

http://massrifleforum.com/index.php?showtopic=245

Hi everyone,
The Loeb range will be closed Wed. 5/14 starting at 6:30am, and will not reopen until Thursday 5/15 late afternoon.
We apologize for the short notice. This is when the contractors who are doing the work can start (and the break in the weather played a factor also)
Check back for updates.
Thank you

Time to talk to the Wifey!!!

Glad to hear it. She should have a fun time based upon the feedback we've received in the past.

My apologies to any others trying to follow this but I posted information (I guess I did something incorrectly) about the MRA's fifth annual "Women's Instructional Shoot" on June 21st.

Additional information can be found at either the MRA website: www.MassRifle.com or at www.MassRifleForum.com

Sorry for any unintentional confusion / issues.

I'm waiting to be a real member once I take the safety/qualification part on 5/18. I work with someone who's been a member for years, so from what I hear I won't regret being a member.

I just joined the MRA. I have to go meet with the Directors on the 27th. I kinda hoped I would get my key after passing the written/shooting test but I will have to wait patiently. Really want to get in there lol.

Directors meeting

Geoff,

The next meeting is next Monday July 14th. If you have been through the interview you should come to that meeting.

sounds like the "new" requirements kicked in... sheesh!

they talked about this when I joined back in March 2008... I picked up my application, got my picture taken, came back a week or so later for my shooting / written test and got my key fob... -even that was a slight PITA with my sometimes hectic work schedule..

it's close to home, so I joined... otherwise, i'd probably still be driving to Bum F*** Egypt to shoot...

i still need to "qualify" to do the outdoor ranges, but don't have time lately.. last time I shot was in May...

It is a nice club / range once you actually get your key fob...

Do you work there or do you just know of the meeting times? Some of them were full. I also have class on Monday nights but I suppose I could call and say I have to _work_ late [laugh]

Ok...So I guess I'll have to goto the 27th committee meeting, then the August board meeting. Thanks for the info.
