I have a pre 64 model 70 .270 and I'm trying to figure out what type of scope to put on it. It seems that my grandfather had one on at some point because there are mounts on it. ( or I think they are mounts) Any help would be great!!

That would be for an old Unertl-type scope that mounted on the barrel. They were/are long. You can find them, but they are mega-expensive.

You could probably have it drilled and tapped (if it isn't already) for standard receiver-mounted scope mounts.

Hi-Lux makes replica scopes for it. They are cheaper than a Unertl but are being used by a great deal of folks who are shooting rifles that used the Unerti scopes. I have a Hi Lux and its excellent.

The Model 70 chambered in 30-06 was used by Carlos Hathcock in Vietnam with a Unerti and another with a Weaver 330C 2.5x. Thats a beautiful rifle. IMHO I would buy the Hi Lux and keep the rifle as correct as possible.

If you EVER want to sell it please let me know!!!!

You have a classic, super accruate flat shooting hunting machine.

Your scope will be the most important fixture, bar none.

Leopold, Bushnel elite, Nikon Monarch are some scopes that come to mind that would allow you to get the most out of the rifle

Your base and rings are uber important to keep the scope firmly mounted

The best place (believe it or not) to get those things at great values is Ebay.

Just search Model 70 scope mount, rings ect and you will have plenty of choices

Carlos Norman Hathcock , May 20,1942-February 23 1999. United States Marine Corp. sniper with the most confirmed kills in Vietnam. 93 confirmed kills. Sgt Hathcock and a Major Land are attributed with making the sniper part of moderne warfare.
He is a true American hero. Also won the Camp Perry Wilmington cup 1000 yard rifle. . .

Please please please don't change out the mounting system and buy a Hi Lux scope. You won't be sorry. If you try and install a new style scope you will have to remove the old mounts and have the rifle drilled and tapped for a new mounting system to accept the new scopes. It's a classic please leave it as it is.

That's what I was trying to find out. Seems I would have to drill and tap a second set of holes at the rear for a new style scope.
