Today my father gave me his mossberg 142k .22 that he bought in 1956. It has'nt been fired in at least 30 years, most definately more. It's been wrapped in a old blanket and stored in a closet. The outside of the barrel has no more blue on it and has a little rust and pits, but the bore and the wood looks good. Now, I've got to figure out how to disassemble it and then clean it. Any tips on how to restore the barrel? And how would I get it registered? Thanks, Wayne

Use some blue/rust remover or even just some WD40 with fine steel wool to get the rust off, then you can cold blue the barrel if you want to do it on the cheap.

Only use the blue and rust remover if you want to totally strip the finish that's left. Otherwise use Break Free and 0000 steel wool.
As for "registering" it, where are you?

To do a legal transfer providing your father is also in MA, he has to file a FA-10 form. He is licensed, correct? If not, you and your father must go to a FFL dealer and have him do the transfer for you.

You say that it has no blue, did the bluing just turn brown and you're mistaking it for rust?
