FID will be ready in less than a month. The less I spend the better.I have narrowed down my choices, and I would appreciate input and suggestions. Springfield 1502D - It's 50$ at the gun shop.If there is nothing seriously wrong with it,what could it hurt? Henry AR-7 - It's cheap,it's multi purpose, and it will serve me well in the possible apocalypse Springfield or CZ M6 Scout -I know, Like I'll ever find one for less than 500$,but if I want something enough I can get it. Savage 30G,Stevens Favorite,or Rolling Block No.4 - Something I like about rolling blocks.Dunno what it is. thoughts?

Pick cans out of ditches, rake leaves for old ladies.
Save your nickles and dimes and then buy a Ruger 10/22.
It is worth working and waiting for.

ditto. they are only $200 new. 20 for a 550 block of ammo, and you can shoot for a few months.

Definitely got to go with either a ruger 10/22 or a marlin 60. I bought a marlin 60 for my first gun for like 90 bucks. That and a brick of 22 for like 15 bucks from walmart. Cant go wrong with a 22.

I'm afraid new 10/22s are over $300 at most shops. Good used ones are in the $160 range. That being said, a 10/22 or a Marlin NYLON are both great rifles.

The AR7 is a jam-o-matic POS. The only way it will serve you well is as a club.

Do like they said. Save your money and get a 10/22. Seriously.

If you go to Dicks they have 10/22's for $199.99 for the blued or SS modal. I would have to agree with every one I would go with a nice 22lr. At the top of the list would be the ruger next would be marlin. Good luck with your decision just remember be safe and responsible and have fun.

I kinda want to get a rifle and some ammo ASAP in case of Obama. I know I keep bringing it up,but I'm cautious. His first act if he's president could be some type of ban.

My first rifle was a Marlin 880SS bolt .22lr for $90 from Four Seasons. Sweet little thing.

Then I got a Ruger 10/22.

If you can save the $... get a 10/22.

But a cheap little bolt .22 has it's place.

If you just want to get a rifle for the sake of getting a rifle... for under $100... it really doesn't matter what you get. Just get whatever calls out to you. [grin]

MOSIN

<$100, BIG BOOM!

Seriously though, I bought my 10/22 for $150 used from Match Shot in Gardner, with a (not great, but not terrible) scope. They always have 2-3 there for around that price.

The president can't ban guns, and if he could ban guns he wouldn't ban bolt action .22s. You can get that gun anytime.

Even if Obama were to ban guns during his inaugural address, you still have until January to save for a 10/22.

I'll tell you what Red, save for a 10/22 and I'll give you a bolt action .22 at the Pumpkin Shoot in Shirley. To keep. Fixxah gave me one after the 4th of July shoot that I was going to give to my nephew, but my brother bought him a 10/22 instead.

PM me the day before the shoot to remind me and I'll bring the rifle and an FA-10.

[shocked] that's freakin cool as hell! B_RED, if you pass on this......... (finish the sentence)

Like the others have said, Ruger 10/22 is the way to go. $199.99ish if you shop around.

I have a Mossberg 702 plinkster I paid $120ish for at Dicks, it's my sons first rifle... cleaned it once after 1000 rounds of various ammo, still shoots GREAT! equal or better than the 10/22 (within 75 yards).

Remind me to stay away from the gun shops you go to...[grin]

I just finished inventory at Dicks Sporting Goods, (boy was that a hoot) and we have 4 brand spanking new Ruger 10/22's for $189.99 a pop....Once the sale is over they go up 10-bucks, but always seem to come down again...

Bando - get a 10/22 and be happy you did...

Hot damn! I f***ing love this place.

Because of people like Jim.

For doing things like this. [shocked][rockon]

Hell of a generous offer, EC!

Jim, you are freakin' awesome! +1 for you, buddy! And you've inspired me - I'll throw in a brick of .22 to go along with Red's new rifle.

Big Red, don't let the fearmongers scare you into rushing a purchase. Nothing is getting banned any time soon, you'll know well ahead of time if something does happen, and most anything you can get with an FID probably won't be affected.

In the mean time, take the advice of everyone here and buy a freakin' 10/22. It's solid, reliable, cheap and entertaining. Once you have one you'll be able to build and modify it till your heart's content, which should keep you busy until you get a LTC.

Get one new at Dicks for 180 - there are 10 dollar off coupons floating all over the place. If that's too much, put a WTB thread out for a cheap used one. I bought two at Zero Hour for under 100 each last fall. They're not too hard to find.

That is quite generous offer, and I definitely won't pass on it! Thank you very much.I will put away the money and build it up until I have enough for a 10/22 or a gun of similar quality. My whole theory for starting off with a single shot or bolt action was so I could work my way up to the more complex actions. After finishing my Hunter ed class, the only action I felt really comfortable with were single shot break actions.

Shooting a single-shot develops the discipline to take the RIGHT shot, which develops the skill to consistently MAKE the shot.

Starting w/a semi often feeds the "spray and pray" mentality, as indicated by the "MG 42" kits and similar wanna-be accessories for the 10/22.

Ah, Grasshopper! When you can shoot the pebble from my hand, it will be time for you to go.

Good advice.

There are also quality bolt action .22s out there. A good one will be more expensive than a run-of-the-mill 10/22 but can be very, very accurate and quite rewarding to shoot reliably. I like a good bolt action for training a new shooter as a step up from a single shot. Get the semi-auto later on.

Red, PM me if you get your FID before the shoot. I live in Groton and work in Acton so we could meet up before then and do the transfer (Maybe at Blue Northern in Ayer).

The REAL Eddie Coyle did it in brown paper bags from the Stop & Shop next to Raymonds at Dedham Plaza. Blue cards, hell! [wink]
