I picked up my first Mosin Nagant today. I was going to wait a bit, but while I was in Shooters Outpost, handling a few of them, and talking to a very informative employee there, I decided to pick one up because it looked great. I figure my gym membership reimbursement from my HC provider will be more than what I paid, so I thought I go to the gym, and get a free mosin, haha. Now to get all this cosmoline off of it!

I got mine for $145 at shooters outpost ( ok, $144.99). There were about 7-8 left after I bought mine, all in good condition. I don't think there is much around for anything less than that right now. Consider a 10/22 for $250+, I think this is a way better deal, haha

I'm already thinking of another one, haha. I watched a few youtube vids that show how to refinish the stock, and they come out incredible. My problem with getting all the cosmoline out right now as I'm in a small apartment. After watching some vids one how to get it all off, I'm guessing I either just start with mineral spirits, degreaser, or boiling hot water. I'm not sure I want to do that to the stock with the boiling hot water. It's going to be a fun messy project today!

Definitely do all the metal parts in boiling water. Very quick and easy. When I got mine the stock was not too bad at all, so a bit of time in the summer sun and some murphy's oil soap was all I needed.

Summer sun is gone for a few months, haha. I just dissembled it in about 2 minutes, wicked easy. Time to go out and get some stuff to make it easier and less messy to get this stuff off. Love it already, and I haven't even shot it yet.

I finished this a few hours ago. It's really easy to work on, I love that. It wasn't as bad as I thought it would be, cleaning all the cosmoline. The cosmoline will probably bleed out next summer, in that case I'll take it apart and clean it up more. But for now there is no mess and it feels awesome, I can't wait to bring it out tomorrow to shoot! I might as well get another one... or 2 for the heck of it! haha

After you shoot it, it will bleed for sure. Also, how is the bore? Clean and strong rifling grooves? counterbored?
I usually electrochemically clean mine slowly and gently after doing a good initial cleaning. After that is just your regular cleaning. You will be surprised at the crap that foams out of the barrels.

Congrats, may i suggest a recoil pad. After a while that mule kicks hard.

I'm pretty sure it's not counterbored? The rifling goes all the way to the end. I tried to look up what exactly the difference was, but not much was helpful. The rifling is very stong and clean, although I've never seen another Mosin barrel so I'm not sure what's best.
