About a month ago I took one of my Mosin Nagant 91/30's to the range. I love these rifles and I have LOTS of 7.62X64R stashed away. My one frustration is that my old eyes are not much good with iron sights much past 50 yards and at that range the Mosin shoots about 6" high. On paper I can usually compensate pretty well by finding the right spot at the bottom of the paper to aim, but for general plinking it is a bit tougher. I don't know about the rest of you, but I kind of enjoy actually hitting something once in a while when I shoot.
Given that I own a few Mosins I decided to take the one with the worst stock (but a good bore) and turn it into a shooter. After a few weeks of planning, ordering and working the result is below. The stock is an ATI monte carlo style. The scout scope mount is made by S&K and certainly seems to be rock solid. The scope is a cheap 2-7X32 LER and has an illuminated reticle. I also installed a Huber Concepts Anti Friction Ball trigger. I surfed the net for as much info as I could find, but actually found everything I needed on good old www.surplusrifle.com. The rifle feels really good and comes up to the shoulder very naturally. The trigger is a vast improvement. I will post a range report as soon as I get to try it out.
My hope is that this will be a reasonably accurate and fun plinker so that I can shoot some of the cheap ammo that I have accumulated.
For the purists out there it should be noted that I did not permanantly alter any aspect of the rifle. I could return it to complete original in 5 minutes if all of a sudden Mosin Nagants in original condition became valuable collector's items. LOL!
